The development of "Wings of the Goddess", a new FINAL FANTASY XI expansion disc, was announced today at the SQUARE ENIX PARTY 2007.
In conjunction with this announcement, a new site has been created to provide the latest development details as they become available, as well as give fans the opportunity to view exclusive images from the expansion.

The time travel thing seems cool, it will be interesting to see all the areas destroyed by the "great war" 20 years ago in their original state. The regions outside of jeuno for example, and also up north in Xarabard.
Is there any info about new classes/abilities/gameplay changes for this expansion?
Posted by: Knightsword May 14 2007, 04:28 PM
no, also a lot of these "timezones" are long before the great war such as Sauromung, which was destroyed by taru when they where fighting against the elvaan in ages past

Of course it'll take two years after its release before any promised features become available. More useless jobs and other tedious garbage. I've given this game another go a few times already, but never again.

LOL, bitter ffxi sentiment.
It's like a bad marriage with these MMOs...
"We had so many good times, but in the end, it just didn't work out. You betrayed me and those wounds will never heal. My job class will never be the same. I loved you; you were my first, and despite all the love I had for you, I hate you even more. Your mere presence sickens me, now.
I tried to make it work, really I did... *cries*
I came back to you. We made love again like when we first met, but it wasn't real. Beneath all the new features, my job was still gimp.
What's this, another sequel? More lies, more betrayal... Never again... good bye my love"
God Bless FFXI

[i'm chargin mah lasers!] can't someone make a post about FFXI without the same 5 people coming into every thread bitching about how shitty of a time they had with it? We get it, ok? You don't like the game. Good for you. I still like the game, and I found this post/news interesting, and I thought maybe people would have some interesting information or responses to seeing the trailer or hearing about new stuff. But no. More "ffxi sucksors" crap due mostly to stigma of drama within said game in the past. [/ok, i'm done]
But yea, this looks really cool. I heard from my "eat our stool deliciously" japanese friend that there will be new jobs, and among them a new kind of healer.
Posted by: Wiryu May 15 2007, 04:23 PM
The worst last resort macro i've ever heard was, "Cut my life into pieces, this is my (Last Resort)."
Whoa whoa whoa, new healer? I don't know whether to be worried or excited!

thats right, white mage. your days of preventing parties from succeeding by making yourself scarce are over. I bet it will be some kind of item-use healer or something.
Posted by: DarkEpyon May 16 2007, 05:51 AM
It could be something like the chemist from FF5, where they would mix items. But then they'd have to cut the price on regular potions to make it more effective, though I doubt that'd happen. Though if it wanted to be like the one from FF5, it'd have to have a few offensive or enfeebling combos.
Posted by: Wiryu May 16 2007, 08:10 AM
Didn't chemist also have the ability to use types of black magic without the use of MP, but as an ability? Chemist makes sense. I figure the abilities being something like cutting down the item usage time, two hour makes the items instantly useable, maybe double effective. I could dig Chemist, but it would be interesting if it weren't chemist at all.
Posted by: Crushinator May 16 2007, 08:33 AM
Another thing with the Chemist possiblity is that there may be healing items that only chemist or sub-job chemist can use (like ninja tools), and that would allow you to use those items to heal other players, cause damage/status effects, buffs, whatever. That way the market on potions and other player usable healing items wouldn't matter.

heh, I was just about to post something to that effect, but you beat me to it. A healer without an mp limit would be really powerful. What kind of drawback (besides sinking gil into healing items) would there be?
Posted by: Wiryu May 16 2007, 08:22 PM
It depends on the abilities. A WHM with the ability to use their MP affectivly can be incredibly effective. On one hand, you have MP which can be tough if you don't know how to optimize it, but on the other hand, items can be just as bad. It'll kill already sparce inventory space, running out of healing items mid battle, "Oh dude! I left all my shit in my MH! Can we break so I can go back and get it?". I'm very curious what an item healing job would have in terms of traits, and abilities.
Yes, I am defending the mage. ;)
Yes, if the rumor of a new healing job is true, I will play it.
Posted by: Crushinator May 17 2007, 01:25 AM
Maybe to differ the class from WHM, chemist wouldn't have as strong (or any) AOE healing abilities, and maybe could also do debuffs in the way of acids/poisons/sleep potions, stuff like that.

well, you can't really compare the 'ultimate-optimal mp using-knows what he's doing-ready to go' white mage to some doofus who forgets his shit in his mog house, hasn't done all the gobby bags, doesn't bring enough healing items. Thats just comparing a good player to a bad one.
I think if this theoretical chemist was as good a chemist as he/she can be, whm will get a run for it's money. and it's about time (like the game chrono trigger).

This game causes so much drama!
It ruins lives, NO RLY i saw it happen, i have screenshots.
It's such a dinosaur!
People still play this? SE still offers support? Egads man!
</satire>
Maybe SE really will make this game live as long as EQ, heh. i didn't see another expansion coming, personally. Cool for the people still playing.

I'm finally ready to feel the sting of getting booted from an endgame party because the chemist needs an invite.
Posted by: Knightsword May 17 2007, 05:15 PM
Opposed to being kicked in favor of a rdm/whm?
Posted by: Wiryu May 17 2007, 06:41 PM
Well i'll be honest, that's never happened to me in endgame. ;)

I'll believe it when I see it. Why don't you play PSU now so you'll be all leveled up for the expansion? It'll take forever to catch up to everyone else at 80 when it drops.

By the time it drops, you guys should have lv100, which isn't very far off for us on JP. She'll get up there lickety-split if you guys ever get Famitsu Cup (or whoever decides to sponsor it for US) where the missions have a 2.5x EXP modifier.

Looks kinda cool, but shouldn't they add more than just 1 job?
And doesn't this come out at EXACTLY the same time as PSU's expansion? I think I'll get the PSU one instead

WARNING New challenger approaching!!!!
A Scholar appears!
Also, the manliest character on FFXI:
QUOTE
Scholars have knowledge of both White and Black magic, as well their own exclusive set of spells. They are not exceptional mages, but rather combine abilities from various schools. Scholars also appear to have some use as a support job to other magic-using classes.
By the way, Scholars will not be hitting anything with books. Their basic abilities are “White Grimoire” and “Black Grimoire.” They function similar to a Samurai’s Hasso and Seigan, in that the Scholar chooses between wielding White Magic and Black Magic, but not both at once. There is no time limit on this ability, so technically you could remain on one set of magic forever.
“White Grimoire” lets one specialize in White Magic by lowering cast times and reducing MP cost. In addition, Healing, Divine, and Enhancing skills are all raised, and unique abilities are unlocked. Conversely, Black Magic spells have their MP cost increased and casting time lengthened. However, you are free to switch back and forth at any time.
With Scholar as a support job, using the Black Grimoire will boost those respective skills, perhaps allowing White Mages to net better results with Drain and Aspir, or land the oft-resisted Paralyze on an enemy.
Scholar brings with it a number of abilities to help one skillfully manipulate magic. There are a set of abilities that can only be used with either the White or Black Grimoire. Similar to a Summoner's Blood Pacts, these abilities are tied to the same recast timer. However, a Scholar has the ability to store up uses of these abilities. For example, say you have an ability with a recast timer of 4 minutes. Normally you would activate it and then have to wait 4 minutes to use it once again. However, a Scholar is able to store up these recasts to a maximum of 3 consecutive activations.
There are also various spells that come unique to Scholar. One allows you to change the designated weather for a target party member. Another causes a great amount of DoT damage. Weather changing magic may not seem like much, but it is great for accommodating preferred spells in battle. Not only does it enhance magic accuracy and damage, but can activate certain pieces of armor.

I think they plan to drop one more job, but in the meantime I do think the scholar is interesting. We'll see how it turns out when it hits.
Posted by: DarkEpyon Nov 4 2007, 06:28 PM
My guess is it could be another melee job. I must be some sort of glutton for punishment as I've started playing again. I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit now, and am looking forward to this expansion. I should have a job to 30 just in time.

Open Mog House! (11/07/2007)
Perhaps you would simply like to enjoy a quiet cup of tea alone with a close friend. Maybe you finally arranged all of your furniture just so, and feel compelled to show it off to that special someone. Or perhaps you are the entertaining type, and want nothing more than to play host to a special guest of honor.
If any of the above applies to you, then look no further!
Following a dramatic reworking of official Mog House Management Union (herein referred to as the MHMU) policy, players will now be able to freely invite guests into their Mog Houses.
This most recent improvement to Mog Houses across Vana'diel comes at the behest of Prince Trion, Lion of the Kingdom of San d'Oria:
"Those familiar with my quarters in the Chateau d'Oraguille are aware that they are being constantly and freely visited by adventurers at their leisure, ofttimes unannounced. Contrast this with the Mog Houses of these very same adventurers, where dated regulations strictly prohibit the entry of any but the sole resident. Why, I ask you, are these private residences managed in the same manner as our wartime barracks?
"And so I, as a member of the royal line of d'Oraguille, decree with the strongest of convictions that this state of affairs is both unfair, and unjust!
"Our adventurers should be able to open their private domains to the public, should they so desire. The discretion, nay, the very right to invite and entertain guests should lie with none other than the adventurers themselves."
Despite the somewhat strong personal nature of the prince's proposal, the heads of the three nations eagerly expressed their immediate approval. They had, in fact, been searching since last year for a way to reward Vana'diel's adventurers for their continued service.
At first, the MHMU opposed the opening of Mog Houses to guests, citing concern for the safety and welfare of adventurers everywhere. However, recognizing the ultimate necessity and precedence of individual freedom, they conceded at last, and adventurers can now rest assured in the fact that their latest Mog House renovation has the full sanctioning of the MHMU.
So what new use will you find for your Mog House? A museum of sorts to showcase all of your precious collectibles? A relaxed sit-in café with just the right ambience? Or perhaps even a base of operations to discuss your party's battle strategy?
The choice is yours!
Up until now, players have been unable to welcome other characters into their Mog Houses. The Mog House was initially established as an isolated area where players could not only escape the hustle and bustle of the city, but also where bandwidth could be reduced to an absolute minimum for those inside, thereby reducing the overall burden on the servers. This would also reduce client-side load as well, since there would be less characters than in the city areas, ultimately reducing overall CPU time.
However, it has now been five years since FINAL FANTASY XI service began, and the three nations of San d'Oria, Bastok, and Windurst have seen a dramatic decentralization of their populations to other urban centers. This, combined with the server hardware upgrade planned to coincide with the release of the Wings of the Goddess expansion, has brought about a marked increase in our servers' capacities. This allowed for a rethinking of Mog House functionality, and resulted in this new feature.
This new feature does not require the Wings of the Goddess expansion, and will be available to all players.

What exactly does the dancer do that is different from other support jobs like BRD or COR anyhow? Or is it even a support class?
