Apocalypse Tribe HQ _ Entertainment _ Monster Hunter (PS2)

QUOTE
Capcom's Monster Hunter has been on our radar since the game was first revealed at Capcom's pre-E3 event last year. The unique online game casts you in the role of a prospective monster hunter out trying to make a living. We got a brief look at the game in playable form at last year's Tokyo Game Show but have finally been able to get a solid feel for what to expect from it at Capcom's recent press event.

The promising game seems like a mix of slick, original ideas along with an evolution of many of the gameplay elements introduced in Sega's Phantasy Star Online. You'll create a character that you can use in either single-player or multiplayer mode, and you can customize it by tweaking a number of features. Aside from being able to personalize your character's name, gender, face, hair style, hair color, and voice, you'll have to decide which faction your character comes from. Monster Hunter will feature several different groups, which all have unique arsenals and fighting techniques. Once you've created your virtual avatar you can choose to hop into an offline or online mode.

The game's story appears to be fairly simple and serves as more of a gateway to get you into hunting than anything else. You'll play as a young monster hunter who is looking for some prestige. Your road to notoriety will be a long one, thanks to a deliberate design that ensures you don't plow through the game. You'll have to talk to different characters and look into expeditions that will send you out into the wild world. However, the development of individual characters doesn't hinge only on clearing levels but also on the strength of the weapons and protective gear you'll possess, which will influence action and battle tactics. Weapon shops located in the neighboring towns and villages let you buy, create, or strengthen powerful weapons and armor using items collected during combat and the skin or horns acquired from monsters you've killed. The effectiveness of items will vary depending on the materials used to produce them. Capcom is stating that the variety of armaments used or obtained is almost limitless.

The core gameplay online or offline is simply to get stuff by killing things--the tried-and-true method of other action RPGs. As you collect items and check in with the local guild in the town you reside in, new expeditions of varying difficulty will open up. The collection element in the game looks pretty cool--you can collect items and use them to power up your armor or weapon. As you'd expect, such items don't grow on trees and have to be used carefully to ensure maximum gain for all your hard work. However, no matter how solid the single-player game is, the online multiplayer mode is going to be the place to be. Fellow human players help you tackle the nasty creatures in the game, and you'll also be able to trade unwanted items with them.

Controlling your character is pretty easy, especially if you've played PSO and have had to deal with centering a camera behind you fairly often during combat. The interesting addition to the mix is using the right analog stick to attack, as opposed to a face button. Directional combinations of left and right or up and down will let you perform combos that can seriously hurt your quarry. You'll have one weapon whose firepower will vary depending on what you choose to use over the course of a hunt. You'll find quite the arsenal to choose from before heading out, but you'll have to be very comfortable with your choice, since you'll be stuck with it for a while. As usual, larger weapons are deadly but slow, while smaller weapons do less damage but afford you greater attack speed. In addition to using traditional weapons such as swords, you'll be able to use guns and set traps that will come in handy for taking down the larger creatures.

The online multiplayer game in Monster Hunter is pretty standard but looks to be fun and addictive. You can participate in group sessions with up to three other players. You can either compete to see who can be the first to achieve certain goals or work as a team to take down powerful monsters and accomplish tasks. For example, you can work collectively to create traps for unsuspecting monsters or distract a monster's attention so that a party member can escape from a dragon's nest. In addition, new quests and items will be slated to follow over the course of your time with the game.

The graphics in Monster Hunter are looking sharp and are certainly atmospheric. The lush prehistoric setting has allowed for the creation of some expansive and beautiful environments that are chock-full of monsters of all shapes and sizes. You'll encounter everything from mellow herbivores to much more aggressive velociraptor-like creatures. And the poster boys for pain in the adventure appear to be massive wyverns that come in a variety of strains that are all pretty deadly.

From what we played so far, Monster Hunter is looking very promising. We noticed a few hitches to the control system that could be smoothed out, such as the camera and use of the right analog stick for attacks, but the game has a good feel to it already. Monster Hunter is currently slated to ship this fall for the PlayStation 2. Look for more on the game in the coming months.

This game looks pretty darn sweet. Unfortunately the release date is still TBA so it's no telling when we'll see this game. Perhaps Capcom will reveal some more on this one at E3.

Also, check out the official trailer 2. It's intense. beigebigeek.gif

Nice!!!!!!!yes this game looks pretty good...so many potentially great games coming out this year.

The official website has been updated. Of course, unless you know Japanese, information may be kind of hard to discern. However, by clicking around, you can actually find some nice screenshots of the game as well as some video footage.

Someone from GameFAQs also partially translated the Q&A section:

QUOTE
Q1> Can I play single player mode offline?

A1> Yes of course. A single player mode is avaible (you need to start offline to make your character first)

Q2> What type of characters are there?

A2> (talks about the hunter class and sub-classes gunner (bowman) etc....)

Q3> How many types of weapons can you bring into battle with you?

A3> One only. (unsure if they mean only one type but many different variations or just 1 period.)

Q4> Can you chat during battle?

A4> Yes with pre-made sentences (I think) and the keyboard) (I had trouble reading this)

Q5> What are the cat characters?

A5> THere are white ones, "Ailu" and black ones "Meral" (katakana readins so I dont know in the final English version)
says they do something like that of a courier bringing the hunters to town after battle (defeat). more details later....

Q6> Can you take items you aquire offline into online network games?

A6> yes, you certainly can. beigesmile.gif

Q7> something about quests mode online.

A7> The avaibility of quests online (unsure too difficult to read for me)

Q8> Diddo.
A8>...

Q9> are there penalties for the players?

A9> If you are defeated (die) your are brought back to the closest village you came from and your money is decreased to zero. (similar to PSO)

Q10> (had trouble understanding but again something about quests)
A10> ....

Q11> How to play online (in Japan). what service to use.
A11> talks about the online service providers in japan. (for most readers I dont think this concerns you so I want bother translating it.

This one looks like it could be good.

I am bumping this because I saw some footage from E3 about this game, and I think it looks badass. Here is some of the character art from the official site.

Posted by: unitself May 18 2004, 08:42 AM

I read about this one in the latest GMR magazine (i think it was GMR). It sounds very similar to PSO and the article even says it also. The said that the game style is pretty much the same except it's more 'dinosaurs and ancient' not 'mutants and lasers'.
Screenshots are very very cool, aren't they?
Check out that crazy ass jawbone broadsword that guy is swinging! Damn! Now that's just plain cool.

Posted by: rikku May 18 2004, 12:08 PM

This game is definitily one I'll be keeping my eye on, and like everyone else has basically said, it looks very similar too PSO.
I saw a release date for it at http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/243372.asp for the end of Aug. I have no idea though if that's accurate, probably not.

Looks like I will be bringing my PS2 online. I wonder if they'll start shipping the HDD seperate now, or pack it with this game too, like they did FFXI, or both? All I know is I better start saving money now.

Whoah....... didn't realize it was coming out here in September. I'ma have to get me a PS2 network adaptor, and hopefully get my girlfriend on board (providing she gets broadband by then).

I was cursing the broadband only, seeing as I was gonna get the game, but I see no point now.

this game looks so sweet but bb only :(

Posted by: Dive Aug 24 2004, 09:04 AM

I have been trying to get some more detail on the online aspect of this game. Can anyone find any more info? Here is what I have pieced together so far. I think it will work just like pso. When you go online, you are asked to choose a server. Once you are on a certain server, you then either make a town(room?) or join an alreday existing town. This makes it sound a lot like pso to me. Each town supports a maximum of 8 players. Then you choose a zone to explore. Each zone supports 4 players. There are options you can set up for your town, like Friends Only, or Solo Play. Sounding an awful lot like pso? If this information holds true, think of it as pso, but having 8 people in Pioneer 2, with the ability to split up and explore a zone with two independant teams (or more?).

In addition to hunting Monsters, there is cooking, crafting, and fishing, all in a limited sense I am sure, in relation to FFXI.

If anyone can find more info on how the server, towns, and zones work, that would be great.

Posted by: DarkEpyon Aug 24 2004, 10:59 AM

When in a town, your character is visible, but not before picking one. Also, Capcom has an interesting anti-cheating method. Hacked items and normal items are coded differently and won't show up when online. Here's something that may garner Crush's attention.

If you haven't figured out yet, armor comes in pieces, a la FFXI.

Yes, there's even a ninja sword.

Day one for me for sure. I'll probably only be able to play for a couple hours the first night, but I'll be there regardless.

I heard that it's well liked in Japan, I wonder how it will do here. I think i might get a newtork adapter and give it a try. shades.gif

I'll definitely have the game, but I can't guarantee anything with having the network adaptor at the same time.

Posted by: Riel Sep 8 2004, 01:56 PM

I'll be there, maybe not the first day and it depends how i'm doing in Fable but i'll try.

Posted by: rikku Sep 8 2004, 02:57 PM

I'll be getting it, and will go online eventually, but not on day one. I'll be spending some time offline first, so I can get the basics of the game down.

When I go online also depends on how much I get into Fable.

What's the head count for day one so far? Maybe we can set up a n00b game^^

Posted by: rikku Sep 12 2004, 03:55 AM

Up until now I though Fable and Monster Hunter came out the same day. beigebigrazz.gif Hehe, stupid me. beigelaugh.gif
But since Monster Hunter comes out like a week after Fable, it is possible that I might decide to go online day one. Providing if I get it day one that is. If I don't get it day one, or if I'm still playing Fable a lot, it might be a few days after day one before I get online with it.

I stopped in my local EB games store recently and I thought it said 9/22 but its close enough. Also I thought I saw something in the thread about the subscription being free...? Does this mean the subscription will always be free or free for the first month? Also I should be on this game the night it comes out here. I would probably read this more but I have to get to my next class soon =|

G00f? Surely you meant "g00d"? Well, the Japanese had to pay for this, just like PSOv1. Maybe this'll end up like PSOv1/v2. There is talk of a Monster Hunter 2 in the works, so maybe those of us across the pacific will also end up paying just like our Japanese counterparts. I'll leave it at so as not to whip anything out of proportion.

Got Monster Hunter reserved today. The lady at GameSpot told me it should be in tomorrow. Boy, I can't wait. I'll hopefully try to make it online tomorrow night.
beigesmile.gif

They also had Star Wars: Battlefront in but they wouldn't sell me a copy. I suppose it would be better to just rent it anyway to see if I like it. Though, with my luck, Blockbuster will never have a copy available to rent. >_<

Let's try to organize some kind of meet up sometime soon, as everyone gets the game and plays through it a bit. :D

Posted by: AC9breaker Sep 20 2004, 07:38 PM

I won't have my game until tomorrow at the earliest, but rest assured I will give a thorough explanation of the server/team process. However it's looking like it will only be me and Mute online, so, What say you Mute? Up for a game tomorrow?

I don't know when I'll get my copy. I reserved it at ebgames.com, but they haven't said anything about it being sent yet. Not in an e-mail or the site.
Hopefully I can get on by this weekend though.

Just got the game...i'm going to play a little offline and then go check out the online part...by reading the manual this game looks like a good set-up to make private games if you want...you can save 50 people on your friend list, there's a large chat area, then the town area where 8 people can meet and so on...it should be easy to make a town named AT for example with a password for 8 people and once inside split up in 2 groups of 4.

Woot! Just picked mine up too. Reading through the manual a bit while I eetz. Then it's off to messing with the character creation screen.
beigebiggrin.gif

EDIT: Damn that intro has some awesome music! ^^

Posted by: Riel Sep 22 2004, 12:49 PM

Cool Mute...ok,quick thoughts...the controls will need some getting use to...using the right analog makes you swing your sword,etc...that's a little weird,i'm use to looking up and down with the right analog...the only control you have of the camera is the L1 button which repositions the camera behind you, kinda like the righ trigger on PSO...graphics are pretty good,if you don't mind the PS2 jaggies(i think we are all use to them by now, still looks good)...my main beef so far is the collision, detection of your hits on the ennemy, the hits are ok but when the ennemy falls,a lot of times you go right through the monster, you kinda dissapear in them and when you want to pick up what the dead monster leaves, you stand right into the monster, again dissapearing in them...

Mute i guess we will need to decide where we meet, there's 2 main Worlds, then 4 sub area's and so on...we need to decide an AT/GC area so it's easier to all get together.

There was only about 40 people online in the World i chose.

My name is the same there guys, just look for riel.

Maybe we can make a post with all the servers and Worlds and vote on one in there?

Posted by: Mute Sep 22 2004, 12:58 PM

Whoa funky controls! I actually really like them. It's unique. ^^ Anyhow, I haven't tried online yet. I'm still getting my feet wet offline. Though, I probably should register my name since I do believe there can be any two of the same names online.

EDIT: Damn that camera is gonna take a bit of getting used to after so many years of PSO. ^^; I see what you mean by the collision detection. It is a little weird looking but it doesn't really detract from anything. This came is purrrty. ^^

Whoa funky! I went up to some random plant by a tree and harvested berries. @_@ I feel bad killing these herbivores. :(

Posted by: Riel Sep 22 2004, 01:56 PM

There's 2 Worlds so far:

Brave World.
Sincere World.

Now Brave World is the first one everyone picks so far so if we wanna play amongst ourselves i suggest we use the Sincere World. Then there's the Red Land,Green Land and Blue Land...i don't see how you can name a town after that, they are either vacant or called Aluzard something...might be harder to find everyone then i first thought...

Posted by: Mute Sep 22 2004, 02:11 PM

Yes, I see exactly what you mean. I don't have much time to get more into it since I have to head to work, but I registered online as Mute, so that is the name I'll be using online. Hopefully I'll get a better crack at the online elements later this evening.

Posted by: Dorian Sep 22 2004, 07:44 PM

Where should we meet if we're ganna play together? My characters name is Camulus.

Posted by: Riel Sep 22 2004, 08:39 PM

Finally played a few games online and yeah we definetly need to hook up together, having a good group will help a lot for the fun factor in this game.I'm still a little lost with the controls although i'm getting better...i only have a small weapon for now anyway...a few things i don't like:

the lag was pretty bad on a few occasions,we got a lot of the "seeing a partner hitting air" a few times and teleports all over the place.

you can actually hit a teamate, which is kind of dumb,i can't believe they left that in,you don't receive any damage from the hits but you can be sent flying on your back.

there's no way that i have seen so far that you can heal or support your teamates,it just seems like everyone slashing away at monsters, hopefully this will change with levels as things you equip makes your class in a way.

Good points:

Lots of action, nice interface with all the emotes you find in this type of game but a keyboard is a must again.

Towns are cool, tavern is well done and the game is easy to pick up.

Seems to have a lot of quests and the monsters look great.

I suggest we use the Sincere World and the Blue World to meet up and set things up from there.Once everyone has most people on their friend list,it will be easier.

The game has potential,i can see having fun with this for a while, maybe be not PSO while but if the mid level quest get more interesting then the "noob" fetch quest,it should be fun.

Posted by: DarkEpyon Sep 22 2004, 09:32 PM

A nice little surprise. I got this game in the mail today. So far I'm loving this game and have opened up the 2-star quests.

A few things I've found useful so far.

Fishing is your friend. Fish go for about 30-60z a pop. A goldenfish will net you about 900z!

First thing you should buy is the BBQ spit.

Like almost any game, watch the enemy's attacks so you have a good idea how to avoid them.

Item combining is also a good thing to practice on.

Hopefully this helps some of you.

I suggest we use the Sincere World and the Blue World to meet up and set things up from there.Once everyone has most people on their friend list,it will be easier.

Sounds like a plan Riel. I got my game last night and only had time to complete the one star quests so far, but I am liking it a lot. My characters name is Dive, so let's all try and meet up for a game tonight.

The attacks being mapped to the right analog stick take some getting used to, but after playing that way for a while, it feels completely natural and I wonder how I got by without this control scheme in other action games.

Monster Hunters want to meet up on AIM this evening to organize a game?

Posted by: Riel Sep 23 2004, 06:12 AM

Yeah we could do that although the main Land once you are there in the game is basically a chat area, hopefully lots of peeps get this because i sense a very fun game...things i'm not sure yet but hopefully it's in the game:

Trading between players.

If someone dies can you revive him?

Classes and skills.

you can actually hit a teamate, which is kind of dumb,i can't believe they left that in,you don't receive any damage from the hits but you can be sent flying on your back.

there's no way that i have seen so far that you can heal or support your teamates,it just seems like everyone slashing away at monsters, hopefully this will change with levels as things you equip makes your class in a way.

I thought I heard something along the lines that archers can use like healing arrows or something but Im not sure who else can heal. Also hitting teammates is kinda dumb. Kinda reminds me if you go into an area in battle mode on PSO.

You can't trade any weapons/armor. Not sure about the dead teammate thing. Only 2 "classes" in the game, and skills are acquired from equipment.

As far as online goes, my BB unit is on its way here, and I should be online next week.

EDIT: I had that damn BBQ spit song in my head all morning!!!

I remember reading something somewhere about trading items in the lobby? Maybe I was mistaken, but I will try and dig up some info on it.

Posted by: Mute Sep 23 2004, 05:31 PM

I think you can exchange components such as hides and pelts, however, I'm almost 100% certain that you CAN'T exchange weapons/armor that is of a certain Rarity level (4-5 maybe?). I need to get my ass online for some verification.

I'm at work at the moment so I won't be able to meet you online. More than likely, I won't be online tonight until late since I'm heading to a bartending competition that a friend of mine is in after work. I'll eventually get on there and meet up with ya Riel. ^^;

EDIT: Wow GameSpot's review is horrid....... It left me pretty sour in many ways. Here is my response from a seperate forum.

QUOTE
I find the review pretty lackluster, and I'm sure you beta testers will whole-heartedly agree. Sure, the graphics aren't exactly spectacular, but I think the game looks pretty darn good, even if it's more jagged than smooth. Constantly comparing the game to Phantasy Star Online doesn't make for much of a review, in my opinion. Just because the game has a similar 4 person per game structure doesn't mean it's the same as PSO. I was a long time PSO player and I must say, I find Monster Hunter very intriuging. Sure, the fighting system and lack of lock on to enemies can feel frustrating. But that is part of the overall feel of the game. It feels like more of a "survival" than a simple Action RPG. I find it comical that almost every aspect of the game was viewed in a strictly negative manner. It's almost as if Ryan was peeved about having to put up with 3 seperate "connection phases" (omg horrible!!111 ) just to get online. And from that standpoint, he took the game apart piece by piece (I mean he was chewing on the various "monsters" represented in the game... thats just weak). I can respect the score he gave it, since that is his opinion. However, I STRONGLY feel his review is based off of short hours of gameplay. For one, the discrepancy in the review score and the <b>community</b> score should speak for itself. If this game has caught your interest in any way, I HIGHLY suggest checking it out for yourself. Give the game a good trial then evaluate it against Ryan Davis's review.

I know, I know. Preaching to the choir. ^^;

Posted by: Dive Sep 23 2004, 06:06 PM

Alright Riel, I should be on in the next half hour or so. Anyone else who's got the game online, feel free to meet us.

Edit~ I'll be on AIM as well, if you want to meet up.

I think we have decided to hang out in Sincere Land, in the Blue World.

Had a fun game last night with Riel, Dorian, Astrid, and SaitoH. Remember now that the town itself will hold 8 players, but an actual zone and quest will only hold up to 4 players. What will happen if we get more than 4 people in town is two seperate quests going on at the same time. A bit limiting yes, but a nice upgrade from the PSO team structure.

Posted by: Riel Sep 24 2004, 01:50 PM

Yeah it was fun but the game can get really hard if you meet those huge Boss like monsters hehe...we where just fooling around so we failed 2 out of 3 quests. Now that i know how it works,i guess we will need to prepare a little better...no use heading into a mining Ore quest with no Pick Axe's beigeroll.gif anyway i'll be on again this evening, hope to see some of you guys again.

Sincere World and then Blue Land for the chat room.

Posted by: Zio Sep 24 2004, 08:14 PM

Well Im on Monster Hunter right now so if you guys wanna find me go for it. Ill also be on all night so just look for me sometime. I think the game is pretty fun so far.

Posted by: Mute Sep 25 2004, 10:59 AM

Wow! Last night was the most fun I've had in a while in an online game. Played with Dive, SaitoH, and Zio (sorry we lost ya Zio, the game really needs some kind of "mail" system like PSO). Dive and I ended up staying up pretty damn late as well. We even took down this huge ass bird creature called the Yian Kut-Ku a few times. One thing this game is lacking is some kind of block list because anyone and everyone can "register" you as a friend and locate where you are... and I've already ran into one annoying ass kid named DarkCat.

Anyhow, I suggest we use a different "town" besides Allsburg. There are two other ones if you pres L1 or R1 at the town select. So basically we should figure out a specific area (A-Z) on the Blue land of Sincere World, then use an alternate town besides Allsburg (I can see why the reviewers called the online setup a bit tedious ^^;).

Posted by: DarkEpyon Sep 25 2004, 12:49 PM

No sooner do we get this game over here, there's already an "expansion" in the works a la PSOv2. Feast your eyes on http://ps2.ign.com/articles/550/550771p1.html, folks.

EDIT: I got the network adaptor today, and am setting it up now. Thing is, I won't have a keyboard.

Monster Hunter is very fun, I spent most of the weekend killing monsters, gathering items, crafting items, and having a great time with Mute, Dorian, Astrid, SaitoH, Zio, and Riel. Even DJ Donkey showed up for a while. beigebigeek.gif

I think that this expansion is only for those who have been playing the Japanese version. The preview mentions such things as brandishing weapons in town, and being able to dual wield swords. Those are already available in the version released in the US. It appears we already have the latest release of the game, and now the Japanese market will get the version we have.

Yeah that was fun stuff. Btw did you guys manage to kill the Yian Kut-Ku cuz I was takin on offline but it kept running from me =| a great sword really owns that thing. And I dont have the adapter at my house so I have to play it at my friends to be online, also about the only time I can be on all night is weekends. Maybe if you guys arnt on during the day Ill just catch ya on weekends.

That's good to hear.

Anyhow, do you have a cable modem connection or dsl? I know with mine, I just plug the modem directly into my PS2 but I have to unplug the modem and plug it back in to reset it or else I won't be able to connect.

Also, my PS2 network settings are just set to Automatically Configure or however they have it worded. Btw, I HAVE had it hiccup a few times on the DNAS check but it always seems to go through.

I hope you get this worked out soon. Be good to have you online with us. beigesmile.gif

I have DSL, and the line I'm using is the same one I've been using the past two years to play PSO.

Been playing offline, and can't beat that damned Yian-kut-ku. Time to upgrade from this velociprey gear and get up the money/resources to upgrade this iron sword to a katana.

Posted by: Mute Sep 27 2004, 04:32 PM

Hmmm, others with your similar problem have said they can connect to services such as XBox Live! but still get stuck at the DNAS. I'm guessing you are getting a consistent error message as well? Does this have any information along with it, when it comes up?

It appears that most people having this problem are connecting through a router. Perhaps the PS2 network settings have to be changed accordingly to accomodate for this.

If worse comes to worse, is it possible to plug your DSL directly into your PS2? (If you haven't tried it already)

As far as Kut-Ku, just keep at it until you have a good feel for his attack pattern. Be careful once he gets to about half health he tends to go on a frenzy and becomes a tad more difficult to attack. Oh, and paint the sucker as soon as you can, for we all know he likes to fly away when he's hurt (I'm told paint only lasts around 10 minutes or so, so you may have to paint him multiple times).

*kinda-spoilers*
After looking over pensil's MH website, apparently every other day there is a special event at the Market. Like for instance, the other day we had half price items (which kicks major ass if you're trying to do alot of mining). There is also a day for the three shops individually where you can find stuff on sale you wouldn't normally find (check the rastafarian dude at the front of the Market to see what I mean). Also, there is always a fella in the bottom corner of the Market that will tell you the current special. Sometimes, of course, there may be none.

>>>Oh, AND, the half price only applies to the shops IN the Market, so be wary when you are making purchases from the lady near the Quest Board since alot of her items will be sold in the market at half the price.<<<

Well Im on during the day and on all night sometime during the weekend. And yeah that Yian-Kut-Ku is a pain in the jungle offline...it was funny stuff the other day I played with 2 people who tried to kill the bigger wyvern called gycerops or something like that (whatever the one is that can poison you) needless to say they got owned. I really gotta hurry up and get me a keyboard so this game will be even more fun.

Tell me, did you think we had a chance in hell after it killed you the first time? It was all about patience. Heck, I even ran out of potions toward the end of the fight and had to run back to the camp to heal up. However, our strategy was to have someone keep the sucker awake when it tried to rest in it's nest (area 5). Ended up working out nicely, for in the end, we carved up some pink bird. at-emote1.gif style. beigebigrazz.gif
