Does it only text letters, or are there shortcuts for common words?

Seriously though, its like learning how to type again. I still can't get a decent speed going. I'll give a short rundown after I get home from work. Doesn't a huge learning curve defeat the purpose of me just going out and buying a 10 buck KB and typing easily, while still being able to mashing the photon art button, or does the texter whispher sweet poems to you as well. That thing looks hella confusing to use.
