Its fantastic. The songlist is great (Muse, Metallica, Slayer, Dead Kennedys, Smashing Pumpkins, Tenacious D, Guns N Roses, Lacuna Coil, DRAGON-FUCKING-FORCE!) with over 70 tracks, and the majority (like 85%) of them are the actual original recordings, not cover bands like in GH1 and 2. There are new "boss battle" guitar challenges vs guitar wizards Slash and Tom Morello, and a new "guitar battle mode" where you attack your opponents.
It also has a fully fledged Co-op career mode, with a unique setlist from the single-player career. Each career mode actually has a little story to it as well, with funny cartoon segues between each chapter in the career. You can also play online on XBL, PSN and Wiiconnect (sorry ps2 noobs, buy a new console for fucks sake.) And of course there are high score leaderboards for all the modes as well. On easy and medium settings the game is actually easier than GH2 was, but on hard and expert the difficulty is a lot higher. The hammer-ons and pull-offs are now indicated by the not glowing white with a bloom effect, so its even easier to see when you need to strum, and when you can just HO/PO through a wicked solo. The graphics are outstanding now, too (at least on PS3 and 360, wii looks like the ps2 one unfortunately), and the vocalists lip-synching actually looks pretty convincing this time! There are a lot of costume color options for each character so you can customize them a bit, and a lot of unique guitars to buy as well. The new GH3 Les Paul controller is great too, its a big step up from the X-plorer, which looked cool but felt a little stiff with the rectangle shaped buttons; (the new controller has rounded bottoms like the original SG's) and of course wireless owns. The PS2 version has a Kramer-styled guitar instead, but I haven't gotten a chance to use it to see how it feels. If you enjoyed any of the GH games I don't see how you could go wrong with GH3, and its great if you're new to the series too. On a related note... who is getting Rock Band? I'm picking up the full deluxe pack when it comes out, and it would rock (pun intended!) if we could get an AT online band, or battle of the bands going! -------------------- |
