I played the PC version and loved it,never finished the game because it gets really hard later on and i just used God mode.
Co-op sounded like fun as well.I have to say that Vicarious Vision made an outstanding job on this...it looks amazing and runs at a steady 30fps,it looks better then Riddick on the XBox,you can save anywhere, there's even a quicksave button, the controller works really well...there's a little more loading then in the PC version, but it's not that bad and the loading screen is about 10 seconds. I got to play some Co-op and it's a great ride...it's most of the single player game but with someone along...they added a few darker area's where someone absolutly needs to use the flashlight so it's very tense in some area. The 4 player Deathmatches and the like are very fast though but it's still fun i thought. I'll be online with this most of the rest of the week so if you feel like playing online, the co-op especially, send a message. This game is at least worth a rental just to experience this mode alone. -------------------- ============================

Wow... I am surprised at the LACK of replys to this topic!
I figured all of our hardcore FPS people would be all over this game. What's up? ![]() I played about 15 minutes or so at a local game store a few days ago. I was amazed at the look of this game. It is simply the best looking game I have ever seen. I have heard and read about people bitching because it's TOO dark in some places. Actually, on the PC version, I have heard that the majority of the time you really can't see anything unless you have your flashlight, and then when you have to shoot something you lose the light and the screen pretty much goes black so you are shooting at blackness. haha... That sounds a bit more irritating (and cheap) to me than fun. The Xbox version I played was pretty well lit. Of course it was just the intro marine base part so I would expect it to be lit. ![]() I have not picked Doom 3 up yet because I have some other games in the queue, but I do plan on getting it. I am even replaying Halo 2 to sharpen my skills up! -------------------- ![]() |

The overall lighting changes from PC to Xbox were minimal from what i saw. Though i only played a small part of the xbox ver myself. As for the complaints of it being too dark, i largely blame those people just being wusses and the ones who maxed brightness on "horror" games and ruin the gameplay. Hell invaded Mars, do you really expect it to be sunny, bright and cheerful? As i recall to, only one, maybe two parts were totaly pitch black, and one of them actualy had a neat ass light effect. With lit up canisters rulling through pitch black tunnles every few min. But generaly, if you were careful you could get demons in areas lit with some light, or where they were siloueted so you can see em. If not then, usualy their range attacks or your muzzle flashes light em up enough for you to correct aim.
Graphic wise, the port is pretty damn nice. My pc still looks better, but even still, quite a beautiful conversion and keeping all the qualities. In sound, and graphic ambience. Id buy the xbox ver just for co-op, i really wish that was included with pc. But its Doom as Doom is Doom. It certainly isnt for everyone, but i personaly highly enjoyed the game. All like 5 times ive played through. Semi off-topic, the expansion for PC was quite fun, about 2/3 length of original D3. It was overall a bit more "bright" than original as well. As a result i wasnt as spooked playing it. But still fun, and ofcourse double barrel shotgun is back and in full fun power. |

So, I picked up Doom 3 for the Xbox a few days ago and I have to say - I really like it. It's great fun and genuinely spooky. I think that the "so dark that you can't see anything without a flashlight" are very cool. Those guys did a great job of making the flashlight look totally realistic and I love the ominous, claustrophobic feeling it gives.
I am so glad that I (finally) bought this game. It's just what I needed. Sometimes you just want to shoot hell's minions, you know? Questions: 1. How long is this game? How many hours to complete for an average player? 2. How is the expansion pack? Fun? Worth it? I haven't tried co-op mode online because I don't have a LIVE account. -------------------- ![]() |

The game is pretty long for a FPS, i would say close to 20 hours if you take the time to read all the stuff you find with the PDA(some you have too to get codes and such)...i'm grabbing the expansion that's coming out today for the XBox as well...it's cheap and i read it's more of the same with a few improvements.

"like a shot in the dark, one step away from you" -- Ozzy Ozborne
to me, the "pitch black" factor is what makes Doom3 stand out from other horror games, i think anyone will admit that sight is man's most crucial sense, taking it away at the same time as being confronted by horrible, grotesque demons really gets the adrenaline flowing. couple this with the amazing atmosphere of the mars station, and the spooky voice/text logs you find strewn around on the PDA's that belong to the dead, and you've got a really exciting ride. my brother got the game when it first came out, and immediately got the flashlight mod, myself i chose to play through the game with the original darkness intact, sure he may have finished it quicker and easier, but i guarantee he didn't get the experience out of it that i did. there's just something great about putting the flashlight down, hoping the monster didn't move much, and going with the old spray n' pray. ![]() a bit more on-topic, never got to try the xbox port as i dont even own an xbox, i'd imagine its twice as tough trying to do everything with a controler though ![]() KB/mouse > controler for FPS |

I think basically the opposite. To me, the controller is much easier to deal with than a keyboard & mouse. It's probably just what we are used to using the most though. I first got into FPS with Marathon, and (as far as I can remember) using the mouse was a total pain in the ass. You had to roll forward to move forward on the screen. Looking up and down was with the keyboard. It drove me nuts, so I just went ALL keyboard when playing Marathon. I don't remember there being a way to reconfig the set up either. I only really started playing FPS's on consoles. My only problem is when things get really hairy. I tend to freak out with the controller which makes me shoot straight up in the air and then I get all disorientated because I can't tell which direction I am facing.
![]() I have to say the more I play Doom 3, the more I like it. It's only happened a couple of times now, but I TOTALLY love it when the screen turns all red and f'ed up, you basically lose control of your guy, and the sounds get all freaky weird and growly. Then, it fades back into "reality" and you are face to face with multiple baddies. That sensation is awesome. -------------------- ![]() |

That's your problem right there, that is completely opposite of a standard mouse/keyboard control scheme. I can see why you don't appreciate that setup. There is just a finer more precise feel to aiming with a mouse, you just don't get that with a clunky controller. I digress though, we've had this argument many times. I only got to try Doom 3 for PC for a very brief time, and then it was only the first level or so. I may have to rent the xbox version. I was looking into this as a possibility for xbox fps options: ![]() Xbox Mouse and Keyboard Adapter |

hahah yeah, there have been several games that have atempted to redefine the typical KB/Mouse controls for FPS, and they all have done nothing less than a terrible job, that being your first major experience with the KB/Mouse setup, i can understand being disgruntled with it ![]() I first saw KB/mouse VS. Controller users on Q3A on the dreamcast, at first i obviously didn't have a mouse/KB so you make due, i remember getting owned by KB/mouse users, i promptly got the KB/mouse for the DC and turned the tables. ![]() a bit later though, i started playing UT2001 for the DC, and the tables were turned, Control users had a wicket auto-aim that was built into the game, and they would give me a run for my money, hahah. Apples and Oranges i guess. |

I liked the expansion, some fun shit in it. It is a lil shorter than Doom3, proly 12-15 hours. One thing that stood out is they kinda gave in to some of the whines of the "too dark" bs, and some of the spooky factor is missing. Irregardless i highly recomend the expansion, i mean super shotgun, do i need to say more?

ok.
I am very close to finishing Doom 3, and it seems that the difficulty has been severly knocked up several pegs. I knew Hell was going to be a pain, but DAMN! And now that I am back on the base, it's no better. I find that as soon as I enter a room and fight what's there, I save because if I don't I'll most likely get killed in the next room and just have to do it all over. HA! I almost gave up at Sarge. It took me lots and lots of tries to kill that s.o.b. I know I am no pro gamer, but "easy" mode should be what it says it is. ![]() I'm still going to pick up the expansion though. All the old Doom games are on it! Now, I'm glad I passed on the Collector's Edition. -------------------- ![]() |
