video games are known to bring joy & fond memories, from the vast mmorpg to the classic fighter to the 2d/3d platform & so on; but over time ~ many character designs come & go, but only a handful are treasured as inspirational (in persona, style & look..). a samurai perhaps, or a mech, perhaps an unknown or even a magic-user of legend?

so here's my thought of the moment ~ which video game character(s) have you admired over the years & which game(s) do they originate from?

Gungrave. How kickass is someone who comes back from the dead armed with a coffin full of guns that doubles as a rocket launcher? Being designed by Yasuhiro Nightow helps the cool factor. I don't know of a more badass character in any game.

Ryo Hazuki, Shenmue. Little suede headed Ryo, hanging out in Sakuragaoka and Dobuita. Killing time buying toy capsules, talking to Nozomi, playing Outrun and Space Harrier, driving forklifts, all the while on a quest for vengence.

Simon Belmont, Castlevania. Who doesn't think Vampre hunters are cool? Armed with an arsenal of throwing knives and axes, holy water, stopwatches, and his fearsome whip/morningstar. Fearlessly plundering the depths of Castle Dracula, slaying Skeletons, Undead Knights, Zombies, Ghosts, Demons, Mutated Beasts, culminating in a showdown with the evil Count himself.

Mega Man - I grew up with the blue guy.

Cecil from FF4 - Former dark knight who overcame his evil past to become a paladin and beat down Zeromus.

Kefka from FF6 - One deliciously sick mofo.

I'll definitely have to agree with Dive about Mr. Belmont.

Dirk the Daring! HA! That wasn't a "game". It was a movie with a joystick. beigelaugh.gif (could ya tell that I sucked at it?)
*sticks gold star on t-shirt and smiles*

My most fond video game character memory is of the blue blur known as Sonic. Not Tails. Not Knuckles. Not Amy. Sonic. Granted I owned a few systems before the Genesis, but when I first saw Sonic and the world he ran thru, and the speed! I was floored. I used to play for hours and hours. My girlfriend (my wife now) would come over and we'd sit on the floor and have a blast. She'd be yelling at me, "RUN! JUMP!! WATCH OUT!" In fact, she still does that to me today. I still have a place in my heart for Sonic. When all those toys came out during the Dreamcast years, I snagged them all up as fast as I could. Hell, I would even have the bed sheets if my wife would let me. HA!
Yep, hands down. Sonic still makes me smile.

DING DING DING!

No fair, you're in the same general age bracket as me... "Old and older" *snickers*

I LOVED that game... *sigh*

I know you're all going to laugh at me, but I love the Tomb Raider series - it's the reason I bought a PSX to be honest...I wanted to play Lara Croft. I realize they created her so that it might pluck at the heartstrings of you wanna-be heros, rushing in to save the poor damsel in distress in all her big-boobed glory, but I thought she was cool, as does my daughter...finally a chick that can hold her own, no Princess Peach, no Mary Kate and Ashley Hit The Mall. She's a character with such personality to me. (I hope it doesn't count that I never finished even one of her games... *grin*)

Link

Link is the greatest character on earth. He's sexy, badass, and a hero. WHo can ask for more?

I was so pissed to find out that in the Wind Waker, it wasn't link anymore, it was some faggy kid who looked like link, I can't play that game anymore.

I gre up playing zelda since it was 8-bit. It has to be my favorite game there ever could be.

Yea Link is teh man, he can pwn you.

I definately agree with Dorian. Link was the first character to pop into my head. I've always enjoyed the Legend of Zelda series and can't wait for the latest one to come out.

I've also always liked Tachibana Ukyo from the Samurai Shodown series. He's just a quiet katana wielding badass. He doesn't even need to look at his opponent to beat them. beigebigrazz.gif

ok, favorite video game characters over the years..
*reflects*

~male archetypes..

Alucard - Symphony of the Night
~for his age & status as the prince of vampires, Alucard’s persona inspires me - his regal silence speaks powerfully in different guise ~ action through mystic power; i’ll not forget him anytime soon..

Kain, Raziel & Mobius ~ Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver
~the archaic presence played by these three individuals is primary reason why i played the series to the final ending...Kain especially, he took nothing from no one & when betrayed ~ Kain delivered final retribution in proper fashion.. Oo where Kain reveled in the fury of battle, Raziel balanced with keen insight & perception - all the while trying to solve his own history while enduring formidable tests of madness from all sides...& Mobius, though he played a primary nemesis - i value his love of knowledge for the secrets of time ~ hence, the Time Streamer..

Elta ~ Magician Lord
~Elta is the definition of Magician Lord, the perfect template of what i would imagine true magicians to act & be; his skill & fortitude are commendable & i’m honored to have had the chance to live his tale of high adventure..

Balmung of the Azure Sky ~ .hack//
~i’ll admit *^^* that i have a weakness for the handsome, strong silent type & Balmung would make me melt in his presence just a little bit; definitely worthy ~ rar.. ;) but seriously, Balmung holds an air of honor & mystery, but beneath his veil of strength is a poetic heart & calculated mind - i admire that..

~female archetypes..

heavy-blade BlackRose ~ .hack//
~most often, i tend to admire the women of video games that are unorthodox, adventurous & kind in spirit; this one is no exception...BlackRose is from the series - .hack// & her character type is categorized as, heavy-blade ~ very similar to what to HUnewearls are all about...in essence, BlackRose is lots of fun to play, but now that i ponder this further - they all do from this series.. ;)

the HUnewearl ~ PsO
~the character type of this particular game is what we make of the experience; of all classes that i played during my time on PsO, HUnewearl is the most fun, to me anyways.. ;p

...

more now than before, it’s nice to see more female roles being taken beyond the cliche’ fascade of the princess-like "damsel in distress" scenario awaiting the "knight in shining armor to come save the day" scenario...i’m more the advocate for a nicely balanced harmony between the sexes..

QUOTE (DivA @ Jun 9 2004, 09:19 AM)
so here's my thought of the moment ~ which video game character(s) have you admired over the years & which game(s) do they originate from?

After giving it some serious thought, none at all. There are many favorite gaming icons that I have gamed with over the years, whose gaming goodness I enjoy throughly, but, after reviewing the above question throughly, there is no game character I admire.

I guess I look at the characters differently. I tend to see them as fictional(obviously), but more so that it took an actual person to create the character. So, I really don't admire any game character, but I admire the talent and creativity it took to create such a character.

So, while there are many games and game characters who I think are awesome in their design, I admire none of them.

Unless the question is, What game characters do you think are ''cool'' and what games do they belong too?
