Mission log, 07/09/07

It had been several months that a desire to play with the Nintendo Wii, had been ignited me. Wait, it has in fact actually been several years. Since word first hit the net of this new electronic gaming system as codename Revolution. I knew this was going to be something big-nay something AMAZING-something I MUST PLAY. ...and as time passed, my assessment of this new device was proven to be true with each and every passing day in till finally. The Nintendo Wii was launched. It was madness, Man against man, woman against social norms-kids against vegetables The Koreans where afraid that this chaos would envelope their nation and quickly began to gain nuclear leverage in hopes of quelling whatever trouble may come their way in the near future thanks to this powerful trinket of Nintendo's! mario.gif

In any case, I too desir-no...I lusted for it-I needed it-I HAD to have it. The Nintendo Wii must be in my possession. Nevertheless, a greater power would not have for such a thing; for in the 9 months that have passed in the launch of the Nintendo Wii, my wallet has suffered the slings, and arrows of unfortunate fate. However, the drive I have to own a Nintendo Wii is uncompromising, unyielding, restless, relentless, persevering, and most of all, ABSOLUTE! I have beaten back all the challenges that deny me my Wii- deny me my money. Finally after 9 Months, I can afford a Wii. trophy.gif

Despite all that, fate still chooses to defy my will. I begin my journey to obtain a Wii today at around 1pm. First I head to a local, privately owned, small establishment in the city market. Out of stock. I then head to the beast known as Gamestop, located on the same street. No Wiis where to be found. It seemed I would have to search bigger complexes, so I headed back to mission control and hopped in my chariot and traveled the scorched and blasted land known as New Jersey. 3 Malls, 1 outlet, 9 stores in total, and not a single Wii in stock. Back at mission control, I research several potential sources. But alas, not much luck was had. Then I find this, WHAT!? Is this a sign of some sort!? IT IS AS IF THE GODS THEMSELVES DEFY MY WILL!!! WHY NINTENDO WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!! crash.gif crash.gif crash.gif

I was in basically the same boat as you since the Wii came out, till about 2 months ago. Then I just got fed up. My weekly shopping trips ending fruitlessly. I had lost the desire to play Zelda, the only "real", "meaty" game I had interest on the Wii. 10 months and still only one game I was truly interested in playing, and its a port of a last gen game of all things. Its over, throw in the towel.

It was my oldschool Nintendo-bred yearnings and new-tech fetish driving my desire for a Wii, not a compulsion for the games on it. At first it did seem like a "revolution", massive potential. I couldn't wait to see what developers and nintendo themselves would pull out of it.

But now here we are with nothing but shitty minigame fests, and half-baked PS2 ports with shitty waggle gesture controls instead of intuitive one-to-one movement like was initially promised. And lets not forget them charging out the ass for old games that are completely devoid of new, online, or HD content, again mooching off the nostalgia factor. Don't even get me started on the lack of online games.

I'll get one when Smash Bros comes out, but besides that, I can't give enough shits about Metroid, Zelda, or even my man Mario to drop 250 bones on a system I will play <10 games on. I never thought I'd say this, but odds are I'll have a PS3 long before I end up buying a Wii.

I played Wii over one peer's house. It was cool and all, but I got tired of it in what I would say is a few hours (the mini games that is). He was in love with it though.
It's really really awkward to use for shooting games and the mass appeal of a cool new controller isn't being done right at all. Wii does not is any way NEED PORTS; it needs UNIQUE games that maximize the potential of the remote. Intill that time comes, I ain't getting one. I probably see myself getting a Wii the year before the next next gen systems hit the street. Then I can hand pick all the quality Wii games and pick up the system for dirt cheap.

I sure as hell ain't getting a PS3 anytime soon.

Then again you never know. All it takes is one game to change someone's mind a pick up a system (ie. PSO~PSU).

I still really enjoy my nintendo Wii. ;)

As for the game prices? I only buy snes, and those are pretty much the same price as the 360 games more or less.

EDIT:This post was a reply to AC's original comment, not ment to the quote of HC82.

To tell the truth i have a Wii but besides Zelda and maybe Paper Mario, for now,you arent missing much game wise with the Wii...it is not a gaming console so far, more of a fad console, which is ok i guess.

Well the truth is I'm looking for a Wii too. My friend has one, and we do end up playing it a lot (mostly when incredibly drunk haha). Besides that, I NEED a Wii. I NEED one because Super Smash Brothers is a must have. It is one of those games (much like MGS4 is shaping up to be...) that warrant a purchase of a system for one game. Yeah I said it, I WILL spend 200 hundred bones for one game, this is a fact. The reason is simple. I know for a fact that this game is exclusive, and I know as well that I will get my money's worth. My friends and I have spent hours upon hours on Melee, and again, I'm a little embarrassed to tell you how much time that actually is haha. For a reference, my personal play time is more than any MMO I've played. So there you have it, sure, it seems very much like a gimmick console, and hey it might be. But it's a gimmick console with Super Smash Brothers. Alas though, much like AC's woes, a Wii does not exist here. But I MUST get one before Thanksgiving... or the Christmas rush will screw my chances. Damn you Smash Brothers, DAMN YOU.

Is SSBB even coming out this year? Or is that just wishful thinking? They still need to release Metroid 3 and Mario Galaxy, I'm pretty sure those are coming out first.

Yeah Smash is dropping this holiday season on December 3rd. Which is why I need a Wii before Thanksgiving haha. Mario Galaxy drops Novermber 12th, and Metroid drops next month on August 27th. These were E3 announcements, and Reggie doesn't lie... at least I hope not haha.

On that note then, is Smash including online play? They didn't get it into metroid from what I understand, right?

No idea about online play, it might not have it at all. It'd be disappointing, sure, but I'll still buy the game. As for Metroid, I actually don't know if you can play online or not. I'm thinking no though.

I finally found one today. My coworker came into work this morning and said "Hey they had 7 Wiis at Target, I was just there."

So I go in at lunch and there were 2 left, so I grabbed one, Metroid 3, Wario Ware, and the component cables.

I'll be honest, I'm not too impressed so far. For starters, the wii online thing is limited and slow, and wtf @ no demos or trials for VC games. You expect me to shell out these outrageous prices for old games that may or may not be shitty?

And maybe this is just from coming off 2 stellar games in the same genre (Bioshock, and Halo 3), but Metroid 3, which is presumably the best game on Wii right now, seems stuck in the past. Granted I haven't seen all of what the game has to offer, but so far it is just the same-ol-same-ol we've seen for the 2 past metroid primes, with a new control setup. Which is not bad, but not groundbreaking either. Also, there are way too many jibber-jabber cutscenes for my taste in this game, with Metroid I expect no story, just throw me on some crazy planet and point me at the freeze beam. I don't want to talk to some asshole space marine and find out his life story. With the way a lot of Wii games go graphically, using a stylize or simplified look, appearances can be forgiven, but when a game goes for a realistic or detailed look like MP3 does, it fails pretty harshly compared to other contemporary games.

On the positive side, I did enjoy Wario Ware, although a lot of the "positions" for holding the wiimote seemed redundant, and the ones where you need to involve your whole body can be foregone by simply imitating the motions with your hand. The control is way more responsive that I had expected, and it was easy to get used to the controller.

Hopefully Mario Galaxy improves my Wii-Love next month. What other games should I check out? I'm already going to get Zelda, so don't say that.

just wait for smash, that's all that matters on this system anyways. If you do want something in the meantime, if you can stomach going through RE4 again, the Wii controller really beefs that game up. If it's only twenty bucks, Trauma center utilizes the wii remote really good too, though I never beat it because it get's ridiculous.

Can't really think of any other games other than the ones that are mentioned. Only one's I'm looking forward to this holiday are Mario Galaxy and NiGHTS. Then there's of course, SSBB and No More Heroes next year.
Manhunt 2 is due by the end of this month. It looks interesting but I still consider it a wait and see.

But yea MP3 starts off really slow. Boss fights are pretty awesome but a bit easy. There's always Super-duper-uber-hyper-mode after you finish the game. I still enjoyed the game though.

If you're not happy with your Wii, you can always give it to AC9 haha.

An update... as of today, Monday, January 14, 2008, I own a Wii. Yes, a fucking Nintendo Wii. guitarist.gif I got one by getting my name added to a list at a Game Crazy store. The cool thing is, I added my name like 2 days ago, and I got the call today, went to the store picked it up, and now I can rest easy knowing that I can play Brawl. WIN. I also got Mario Galaxy, and I plan to bum a few games off my friend (until i get them myself haha). Anyway, HEL YEH.
