OK so I wanna get online with PSOGC... I need sum advice!

OK, lets sort everything out by sorting out what I have:
A GameCube
An iMac running OS 9.2 using an external USB ADSL modem
The iMac has all the usual iMac ports (2xUSB, 2xFireWire, Ethernet, Modem)
BTBroadband as my ADSL ISP

Coming soon (obviously) a copy of PSO Ep. I & II

Now I need some help and advice as how to get my GC online!
My first choice is to get it online using my broadband connection, so I know Ill need a BBA and an Ethernet Crossover cable.
But what next? I can't connect the BBA directly to my modem, as it has no Ethernet port... but my computer has...
This is making my head hurt! Will it work if i use my iMac's Ethernet port? Or is there no chance of it working simply because I am using an Apple?
How do i get it working from there?

Do you have a router, if you do, all you need to do is connect the Ethernet Cable from your Gamecube to an available port in your router and you're set. If you have a Cable Modem, I believe(not sure) that you need to connect the ethernet cable to your Cable Modem. I'm not sure much about anything else though but I hope I helped at least a little if not at all.

Yeah I know, the whole subject confuses me -.-
As a last resort Ill just get a GC modem and use pay-per-minute dial-up..

As a last-but-one resort Ill have to buy an Ethernet-compatible ADSL modem...

Oh and i know it is possible to use a USB modem through the computer, as there is a guide to doing it... on a Windows-running PC -.-;;

I am not a Mac expert here, but hopefully this might help some.

With PSO you have two options of connecting. You can either connect by a 56k modem adapter (which goes into serial port 1 of your GCN) or a broadband adapter (which also goes into serial port 1 of your GCN). Either of these options work and since PSO was *made* to run off modems since DC days you will not incure much of a problem with the modem.

If you wish to use the modem option you will need a ISP (internet service provider) that uses PPP (I believe) (point to point ethernet protocol). If you wish to use the broadband adapter then you will need a ISP that uses either DSL or cable or some other form of a direct ethernet connection such as a school campus.

You look like you will most likely be going with the broadband option. Do you have your adatpter yet? If you do not you can find them off ebay for around $40 I believe. They still to be in demand.

I was luck to get mine back in November when the first came out and there was quite a shortage. I got mine off EBay for $45 I believe. After I got my BBA I went and bought PSO from my local Hastings. How it happened to be was I bought the BBA first...thinking it was cool to wire the GCN to the internet. Then I had to get a game that used it...so now came along PSO. I did not play PSO before, but do not know how I missed it! heh.

Anyways, back to the subject. You have two options here with the BBA that I can see. One is that you can get a gateway/router that will *route* your internet connection to multiple workstations, clients, or GCN systems. Most routers now days come with a built in ethernet switch...meaning you connect the devices (computers, etc) directly to the router. My Netgear router (which is 4 years or more old) has only one connection and goes to a 10/100 eithernet switch to be distributed though the home. The router is like a small computer that will route your internet connection around. It has two network ports (or network interface cards). One for the internet or WAN (wide area network) connection and one for the local LAN (local area network connection) (which is your side of the connection). The router gets assigned a *real* IP address while all the computers and devices connected internally to the router get *fake* IP addresses assigned to them. Anyways, not the easiest to explain. Let me know if you want more help with this subject.

The other option would be to plug your GCN into your Mac using a special "cross over" ethernet cable, which is not hard to make or find, and get internet access from your Mac. You can be on the internet with the Mac the same time as with PSO. But you have to remember that the Mac MUST be on for the GCN to access the internet. You would have to enable "internet connection sharing" on the Mac. I am not familiar with Macs...someone might be able to help out here. This will *share* your ineternet connection with anything plugged into your Mac's ethernet port.

The only other thing to do is to set up PSO which is not too hard. Just set it up to automatically obtain a IP address using DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol). The GCN will get the internet IP address information from the Mac...you have to enable DHCP server on the Mac somehow. I am not sure how, but should not be too hard.

Anyways, I think I have written quite enough..heh. Any questions just post them here and I will try to get back to you as soon as I can.

Good luck. toast.gif

Good luck to a plug-and-play (not plug-and-prey) setup. Let us know if you are having trouble getting online. We should be able to help out. Like I said, I use a DSL line here, which is somewhat similar to yours, but mine goes directly though a gateway/router.

Hope to see ya online soon.

Nick, you're in luck as I am a bit of a mac expert =) (Or so I think lol)

The only real problem here for me is trying to remember the OS 9.2 stuff.

Allright, the first question I have is, do you have the Airport Base Station software?

(Doesn't really matter if you actually have an ABS)

OK my BBA and PSO r here YAY
Anyways im having problems connecting....
With 'choose IP automatically' or whatever i got IP could not be obtained from DHCP or whatever.
I did manual and for most attempts i got IP does not exist or something along those lines...

After fiddling around for a while, I entered
IP ADDRESS: My iMac's IP address (plus one)
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: My iMac's IP address

And now it connects but I get 'Page not found'....

I cant seem to find a ICS... ive tried turning file sharing, appletalk, opentransport, etc. on and they are all active, except for summin called 'multihoming' which i dont know how to activate...
Airport is a ICS right? I have the software however i dont have an Airport card...
