I was thinking about playing WoW until school starts up again. My fears, however, are that it will play a lot like FFXI, and I'll constantly have to farm and interact with the morons that play.

Can anyone give me a mini-review or an explanation of how the game works? What race do I choose if I want to do a mage class? Do I HAVE to be in a party? Do I HAVE to depend on others if I want to progress far in the game? Do I HAVE to stay in one place for a range of levels? Can I play different jobs if one job bores me? How easy is it to get money for equipment? Are the quests WORTH doing? Do I lose exp when I die, and can someone come loot my corpse if I die?

These are all the questions I have now, but I'm sure I'll have more.

I agree that Stormrage is pretty crowded, but aside from the queue, having a lot of people around is a good thing. Bryn and I have characters on Hellscream as well, due to Stormrage being down a few times last weekend, and it was pretty desolate. The beauty of this game however, is the fact that you can have characters on many servers, and it feels like a different game when you go from Humans in Azeroth to Tauren in Kalimdor. You need to break free of the FFXI mindset, where it was only viable to have one main character.

You may as well at least make a character on Stormrage. Try a different race/class, I bet you would find it interesting.

You playing Horde on Hellscream? I was thinking of making my horde toon on a completely different server so if one goes down I have a fallback.

I've noticed a bunch of people doing that. hehe

I've read around that you can actually solo in the game(after last night, I would really prefer it) and that leveling isn't nearly as bad as FFXI.

Indeed, we initially went to Hellscream because Stormrage was gone from the list a few times and we just wanted to try out a few races/classes. We ended up getting really attached to our Tauren and plan on playing them as well as our Humans on 'Rage.

Can anyone give me a mini-review or an explanation of how the game works?

I can offer my views so far from my somewhat limited experience of less than a week of playtime.

What race do I choose if I want to do a mage class?
I don’t think one particular race clearly exceeds as a mage, however certain mage classes are restricted to certain races.

Do I HAVE to be in a party? Do I HAVE to depend on others if I want to progress far in the game?

No. Never. From all reports, this game can be soloed through its entirety. There are “elite” quests that come into play, that may require parties, however they are not absolutely needed for character advancement.

Do I HAVE to stay in one place for a range of levels?
Someone of more experience and higher level would have to answer this one. ^^

Can I play different jobs if one job bores me?
Once you pick a job on your character, its set. In order to play a new job, you’ll need to create a new character. But, leveling really isn’t a chore and playing multiple characters to me, is much like having multiple characters in PSO.

How easy is it to get money for equipment?
So far easy. What you can’t quest for, you can make.

Are the quests WORTH doing?
Not only are quests worth doing i.e. money and USEFUL equips, they are fun to boot.

Do I lose exp when I die, and can someone come loot my corpse if I die?
When you die you have the option to either run back to your corpse and revive, suffering no xp or equipment degrade (your ghost will spawn in the nearest graveyard), or revive in the graveyard and pay the penalty of a 25% xp loss and equipment degrade. Your corpse is not lootable by other players.

So far this game is very fun. I can play for a couple hours and get something “accomplished”, or sink many hours in without getting bored.

Bryn answered everything, but I'll add my 2 cents. =P

It's very fun and it's approach is completely different than FFXI. The game is fast paced and you don't sit in one spot and kill a certain mob. You can solo the entire game, but if you want to do instances like deadmines (see pics in WoW screenshot thread) you need a group. Most elite rated quests (aka tough) can be soloed if they are green (difficulty rating Red,orange, yellow, green).

Can't promise you'll like it Z, but I've been having a great time so far.

I want to add to this.
I heard that you do not level down for having a death.
You may lose experiance, but you will never lose a level.
If you have not gained any experiance in your current level, and die, you will lose experiance you don't have...in other words, your experiance will go negitive!

So, you can lose experiance, but not a level. Once you level up, you are there forever.

This is making it harder for me. I love FFXI, but sometimes it can get a bit stressful and it would be nice to have somewhere else to go to get away(and even play solo) when I need to. My problem is at the present time, $30 a monthfor two games would be a drain on the bank account.

I've been res'd by the Soul Healer and only suffered the durability loss, no exp loss whatsoever. I counted what I had before the res and it was the same after. I was around level 15 at the time so perhaps the exp penalty doesn't kick in until later levels? Not to mention it is insanely easy to get your corpse back (at least so far). There is actually a radius where you can res yourself and you can see the mobs before you do it.

As far as staying in one place for a range of levels, I suppose this could be yes and no. I've been in Loch Modan for the past 5-6 levels or so but all I have been doing is quests. I'm level 18 and there have been very few instances where I just mindlessly killed mobs. I know there are mob levels around the same range in Redridge Mountains so, yea, you can move to a different area if needed. beigebigrazz.gif

As far as money, I seem to be making enough to get decent equipment, learn all my spells as I level and increase my skill in blacksmithing (I also mine, so I don't buy raw materials off the AH). Close to break even, but once you hit around 15ish, money needed for those levels isn't too hard to get.

EDIT: Oh yea, picks don't break. No need to sink time into raising money just to afford stacks of picks to sink more time into mining with them.

Well, I can say I will be getting WoW. Thanks to the price including the fee, I'll have income taxes by the time the first fee is induced, sinceI'll be getting it for Christmas. That solves my problem of worrying about one or the other since I'll be playing both.
