I'm taking a class on comics (Heh heh), cleverly entitled "Seminar in Postmodernism" this semester. For my first assignment -- given on the first day of class, due on the second day of class -- I'm supposed to submit a research paper on public perception of the graphic novel medium, for which I'm supposed to interview people. So, I'd be very much obliged to anyone who'd like to reply to this post with their answers.
What do you think of comic books/graphic novels as a whole/industry? How do you percieve comic book fans? What is your favorite comic book? Why? What do you think is the average age group of comic book readers? Who is your favorite author? Why? Who is your favorite illustrator? Why? Do you think the unique blend of visual and literary art is a positive influence on literature, as a whole, or negative? What do you think of the recent boom of comic book-based movies? What are your views on traditional, superhero comics, versus those representing an average person under extraordinary circumstances? Why? *** You don't have to answer all of the suggested questions. Similarly, if you have any information of your own to add, please feel free to do so. Any responce, at all, would be greatly appreciated. What do you think of comic books/graphic novels as a whole/industry?
"It's a good medium,creative talent and artistic merits all around." How do you percieve comic book fans? "Visual people who like art,drawings,super hero's and storytelling." What is your favorite comic book? Why? "I always loved Marvel comics,i like Spider-Man for the action and drama." What do you think is the average age group of comic book readers? "I would say about 18" Who is your favorite author? Why? "Stan Lee had some great idea's.i know he didn't write all of the Marvel stuff and he is more mainstream but he is a major reason comic books are still popular today" Who is your favorite illustrator? Why? "I use too love the early Spider-Man and Daredevil artist,forgot his name right now...i liked the way he draws the action scenes,he gave the best impressions of movement and emotions." Do you think the unique blend of visual and literary art is a positive influence on literature, as a whole, or negative? "Positive for sure,creativity is mostly positive." What do you think of the recent boom of comic book-based movies? 'I love them,especially when they are well made like X-Men 2 or Spidey". What are your views on traditional, superhero comics, versus those representing an average person under extraordinary circumstances? "I love the superhero aspect better,i like the more sci-fiction oriented,make believe characters versus the more serious comics". -------------------- ============================

#1 Great Industry that is underapprciated and taken for granted.
#2 Geeks,Brainy folks, etc. #3 Its a close one between Spawn and Spider-man. I grew up with both of them and still have the very first 5 Spawn comics. I would say I like them becuase of their story and drama. and character concepts. Spider-Man, as amazing as he is is always humbled and made human in his comics when he is confronted with the balance of his power and of his daily life and the choices and he must make. I especially love that they also highlight (or use to) the consequences of of his actions. Spawn, just for the badass effect. #4 age range of 18-30 #5 I don't know enough to formulate a good response. #6 The guy who has the done the recently new DC comics. Jim Ross or something like that(Not too sure). He is truely an artist and really inspires me. #7 Definetaly positive. Creativity and ingenuity is always a plus. #8 I like some aspects of it, but im not too happy about it. Its seems like at first it was just a novel idea, but then people saw it was actually something people enjoyed and and rushed to milk the cow for as much as possible. The Spider-Man movies where great, although a few things about it bothered me such as him not using Web cartridges and just having web come out from his wrist. I also didn't like their decision of who would play Mary Jane and Peter Parker. Little nuances like that really bothered me. Plus it seems like the comic book industry is just whoring it self out and will soon be like many of the capitalism tainted things in our country, some artifical and not genuine. #9 The super comics are great the inspire awe and such. But I prefer the normal people under extroidinary circunstances. Usually becuase the charaters are more likeable and you can relate to them allowing yourself to really immerse yourself in the story. Plus its always interesting to see someones plight and the tribulations the must surmount. very inspiring. -------------------- "Brotherhood asked for no friendship, only loyalty. What do you think of comic books/graphic novels as a whole/industry?
Personally I feel that the "paper" medium of graphic storytelling is coming to a close. With the advent of webcomics and the ability to download almost any issue of any series really affects the printed industry. I really hope that it does not go away, there is a real difference in reading something on the web and actually holding the real thing in your hands. How do you percieve comic book fans? I have a great respect for anyone who reads and enjoys comics. I am not so keen on the collectors who purchase comics as an investment, and never read them or even take them out of the protective bag they may have bought it in. What is your favorite comic book? Why? My favorite comic is the 1995 12 issue series The Watchmen, written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons. This series really opened up the medium as an art form. What do you think is the average age group of comic book readers? 18-32 Who is your favorite author? Why? Currently I am very impressed by Warren Ellis and Garth Ennis. They are unafraid to take a look at the darker side of characters. Ellis in particular as I have been an avid fan of his personal site, where he keeps tabs on all of the strange and twisted news that pops up on the web. Who is your favorite illustrator? Why? Although he only does covers, Timothy Bradstreet is very unique. Utilizing photography with live models as a base, he captures a realism not attainable with conventional technique. Do you think the unique blend of visual and literary art is a positive influence on literature, as a whole, or negative? Positive of course. Anything that gets people to read is a good thing. What do you think of the recent boom of comic book-based movies? I think it is good, and may reinvigorate the staggering comic industry. You have to take the good with the bad of course, and sometimes the films are good and sometimes they are bad. Either way it is getting people interested in these books. What are your views on traditional, superhero comics, versus those representing an average person under extraordinary circumstances? Why? I'll read almost anything as long as the writing and art kick ass. I tend to prefer superhero related titles more often, but that does not constiute my entire collection. |
