You know, I'm not surprised at all. Apparently the Asian version of the game was in English. Like, the entire game haha. All Atlus has to really do is dub it, and if it's in engrish, fix up some lines hear and there. This sure as hell beats importing it though, hopefully it's good.

I know AC is playing this, is anyone else on this game? I just picked it up tonight... and I thought "oh man hard game, yeah I can hang." But now I've put the better part of my evening in the game, made it to some part where there's a dragon just swooping over the castle and he just burned me to death and is probably raping my corpse as we speak.

The tutorial and in-game help is the most spartan I have ever seen. I need some protips.
  1. Is the only way to use the souls your earn is to warp back to town from the fucking starting point? Is there some item like a town portal or something?
  2. Is there an easy way to tell if you can wield a weapon? I finally made it to the first shopkeeper in the first area, and I ended up buying 2 weaps (a crossbow and a shortsword) that were both too powerful/heavy/complicated for my character to equip, but the game didn't seem to indicate this to me.
  3. Is there a way to learn magic if your character doesn't innately have magic power? And can you sell items to get more souls? Or trade items with other players?
The targeting system blows in this game, makes it really hard to lock onto a guy you want to fight. But the combat and dodging is pretty fun, and the game itself is still compelling, but I feel like I'm really missing a lot of the experience, and the game itself if not helping me at all.

Also is there a superior class to roll as? I'm not opposed to starting over, seeing as I haven't made any god damn progress yet anyways, having wasted all my money on shitty items.

UPDATE: I beat the first boss, I think i'm starting to get this game. I still don't really understand how I progress my character or change my stats so I can equip better stuff, though.

Incoming PROtips.

Best class? Royal hands down. They start off at level one but they come with the powerfully versatile Soul Arrow spell and a rare ring that regenerates a small amount of MP, even though it's just a little it's much better then nothing. Once you start getting to the higher levels, all classes start to mend together and you could start off as a totally melee class like the barbarian and end up being a pure mage by the time you beat the game. So it really makes no difference, but I feel royal is the most convenient.

Eventually you will be able to buy items that are like telepipes and allow you to use it and head back to town but it's quite a ways for you until then. There is also the white magic miracle called Evacuate which lets you warp back to town. However it's probably too costly for you to get early on as it's 30k souls and Miracles can't be casted without a talisman which you probably won't see for a while unless you loot one of the early corpses in 4-1 or start off as a temple knight.

On to reading the weapon charts. Yeah, when I first started I was confused by this too since it's not as clear cut as other games. Whenever you press the square button to look at a weapons stats there are four bars. The top is the name and indicates what type of weapon it is, Rapier, Dagger, Polearm, Sword, Great sword, Axe, Great Axe and I forget what else. Then it indicates it's damage type with a little image under the name. Normal, Blunt, Slash, and Pierce. Next bar is the weapons offensive stats. Some weapons innately deal a status like the curved swords which are registered as slashing weapons and can deal a DoT effect called bleed. There's also a Poison and plague status effect. Plague status being the strongest of the three. The last little icon is the critical damage icon . You'll figure that out as you go along. Next is the weapons defensive stats. all weapons can be wielded with two hands and in that situation, the left triggers activate defensive actions such as blocking stance and some allow you to parry with them. Then finally the bottom bar is the requirements needed to equip the weapon. Usually when purchasing a weapon, if you look at the stats and you're unable to meet the requirements the numbers will be in red meaning your lacking in that particular stat. The Icons read, from right to left, Strength, Dexterity, Magic, and Faith.

Magic, first off important part. You can't learn any spells or level up until you have beaten the first boss, Phalanx. He's a pushover and is a joke of a boss compared to the rest. Same holds true once you get to new game +. Once you've cleared the first boss dode, The Candle Maiden will appear and she'll tell you to go talk the monumental. A little golden child looking like kid. He's somewhere up a long flight of stairs in the nexus. He's sitting next to a whole bunch of similar looking corpses of him, but he is the only one with a lit candle in front of him. After that speak with the candle maiden two more times and you can now exchange souls to her for levels. Also, now the NPC that teach you spells should appear in the first floor of the nexus behind some pillars. behind the blacksmith are the white magic guys who teach you miracles. Your faith stat must be at least 10 to start learning some. Opposite side of the nexus are the black magic doods. Intelligence must be at 10 to start learning this.

You can't sell items for. You can trade with other players but it's pretty ghetto. I'm talking PSO version 1 ghetto. Drop an item then go pick it up. Plus hard to communicate since no real chat function. You can however unlock the weapon specific trophies like this.

My biggest advice for you, either start as a knight. Their equips are pretty solid and their stats are quite balanced for beginners. Their armor is a little too heavy for my taste which will slow you down though, something you might not like but if you learn how to effectively use the shield and turtle, not that big of a deal. Or when you fart start with any other class, make sure you save up 2000 souls for a Heater shield. that can be purchased in the nexus. Reason being is, it's the first accessible shield you can get that's 100% damage reduction when blocking. (Knights start off with the Kite shield which is better) Meaning enemies attacks won't chip away at your health. (As long as it's not magical) Also, don't expect to truly understand a situation until you've come across it at least 4 times and always approach with the utmost caution, meticulously analyzing your surroundings.

There's a lot more but I'm sure you'll figure it out as you go a long and it's probably better that way. So I'll just list my top 5 opinions on hardest bosses.

1. Flamelurker - Stage 2-2 (the dood that made me throw my controller)
2. Maneater - 3-2
3. False King 1-4
4. Old Monk 3-3
5. Old Hero (only if you don't have a thief's ring and your not cautious)

but this doesn't go to say that the other bosses are pushovers either. I've still died plenty of times to all the other bosses for being careless. Except for Phalanx. He's a wuss.

After restarting the game 3 damn times i finally made some progress as a Hunter. I beat phalanx and got that ring that extends your life bar when you're in soul form. I did buy the heater sheild and upgraded my starting axe +1.

It sucks that there's no way to sell shit though, whats the damn point of all the terrible loot then? Can you like forge it into better items later?

Nope, most of it is just like you said. Trash. However, if you ever find a broken sword I suggest you keep at least one as eventually it can be upgraded with a pure blooded demon's soul to make the Blueblood sword.

lol relax. After you beat the Phalanx boss I suggest you move on to 2-1. Then 3-1 then 4-1 and after that wherever you want to next. The 2-1 one boss is the armored Spider and I'm sure he'll give you a tough time as I had a hell of a time trying to figure out how to tackle him. Once you learn how to fight him though and successfully beat him you'll be that much more knowledgeable on how to handle the game.

Maybe that's my problem, because I moved onto 1-2 after phalanx instead. One thing I actually appreciate in this game is the feeling of exploration... its not that the stages are so sprawling (not to say they are small, though), but how you need to know every inch of the stage and every trap or encounter so you don't get destroyed. But the sheer BRUTALITY of punishment when you fail, right from the start of the game, is ridiculous. Especially since it kicks off right at the beginning of the game. I can't remember the last time a game pulled the "Mario 1 goomba" and had me die from the first damn enemy.

UPDATE: I restarted again with a Royal like you said, having magic definitely made the first act a shitload easier. But now I'm still getting raped after the first boss, I went onto the first stage of the other worlds and I just get my ass handed to me, still! On 2-1 (am I right in assuming area 2 is the one up the stars from area 1? This game is so unclear on what everything is.) those fucking Pierrot guys with the fire magic just tear me a new asshole. And the scrub enemies are harder to fight than the Act 1 scrubs, but they give like less than 1/4th as many souls to kill? BULLSHIT!

HA, this game is supposed to be brutal and you're supposed to take your time playing it and really be super cautious. I don't have a PS3 where I am now, otherwise I'd be playing this right now.

Yeah 1-1 is Boletarian Castle 2-2 is Stonefang Mines 3-1 is Tower of Latria 4-1 is Shrine of Storms and 5-1 is the epic, Valley of Defilement. Every 3 out of 4 Demon's souls player is sure to hate that stage.
