I work as a security guard for 4 office buildings in the downtown area, betweenthe 4 are about 60 floors. Some nights I'm on patrol and others in operations. I've been with the company for over 4 years and worked at verious other places.

I'm pretty much a slack. (For now anyway)

Although I always like work on my friends cars whenever they need it. They'd be in trouble if I weren't around to fix up their ghetto rides. beigelaugh.gif

I work in an auto parts store (family owned) as a stock/part puller/Computer Tech.

I don't get paid for the comp tech though, I just do it cause computers are badass.

It's an awesome job where we all make fun of eachother racially and ethnically. It makes the day fly buy and I don't feel like I'm even working, I feel like I'm just fucking around all day with cool people.

Whenever anyone calls to place an order the pick up the phone and just start talking as if they were talking to somone who didn't matter. "Yea? You need more fucking breaks? Ok I'll send it out when I get the chance. Oh? You need it rigth away? Well it's first come fisrt serve asshole."

Man it's fun as hell

Esoteric medical testing on human specimens.
I work in specimen receiving which is basically the low end of the ladder, but it's a good company to work for and I like the job. I work with good people.
Basic description of my job: unload samples from boxes, order the tests the clients want run. Stick a bar code on the paperwork they give us and the sample and get it to the lab where it is tested.
While we do just about every medical test thought possible our retroviral (HIV, Hepititus, Epstein-barr, herpes-simplex) testing is probably the best known and most used.
I work nights, straight 7 days one week, followed by a 7 day off period. Any given night I see a few hundred blood component samples (serum/plasma), a few dozen urine samples, a few Spinal fluid sample, a bone marrow here and there and fecal sample (which ALWAYS come in interesting containers) and viral samples (which...thanks to wonderful people not packing their airborne infectous samples seperate from the rest have exposed me to a fun variety of diseases).

I am website manager of the above two organizations (they are one entity, with two marketing brands). It's unique because it's aimed at those 55 and older, so I have to design for a COMPLETELY different mindset. Older people (the average is 72) just do not see technology as we do, they did not grow up with it, nor it with them, therefore things that we take for granted, they do not. It's a great challenge and I enjoy it. Wish I could say I enjoy my work situation completely, but commute to Boston and my boss make that tough.

My real work is user posted image

I go to my other job to relax.

... Seriously.

Oh, and I'm degreed in meteorology, but that sucked hours wise, so I don't do that anymore. However I am still a weather geek. I helped create this site:

That sounds exactly like the pizzaria I use to work for. We would make racial jokes on each other and what not and every Wednesday night would BE Samual Adams night cause the one boss would run the place by himself and just go in the back and drink with his cop friends. He would be so drunk that when it came time to make pizzas they wouldn't even be round. More like triangles and squares. The best pie he ever made thought was floor pie. Pretty self explanitory. The best parts where when he picked up the phone.
"Hello Elin's."
"HELLO ELIN"S!"
"Salads? No we don't make rabbit food."
"What? what the fuck do you think this is dominos?"
" OH yea? Well, COCK IN YOUR EYE!"
No, I am not exargerating. That was an exact phone call I recall.

Yeah but the situation really got to me, and after 3 years of the same things you get tired of it. I just recently quit the place like 5 weeks ago and now I'm unemployed for the first time since I was 14.
Although its relaxing to be able to do whatever I want, its still pretty annoying to not have my own money and just do nothing...

On the side note. Nyn, that sounds pretty fun and those websites look great. I must make a mental note to have you make a propaganda website for me, for when I run for president. beigesmile.gif

I work part-time as a receptionist at a medical office. It's a pretty hectic and annoying job, but my boss is the nicest guy in the world, so that makes up for it, as does the salary :D I swear.. you meet some of the stupidest people when employed at a place that deals primarily with people. We once got a very pissed off message of some guy yelling like crazy that he has been calling for the last few days, and has not been called back. With all the temper tantrums and swearing, he didn't even leave a name and number. Nice. Ever wonder why you're never called back, dumbass? beigebigrazz.gif

I'm also considering getting a second job as a writing tutor at my school, which is what I did last year. I still walk into the Learning Center occasionally to hang out with my old co-workers between classes, and they're all comic book geeks like me, so I feel right at home there.

Whoo hoo! I'll start a new business... "Propaganda R Us". *grin*

It is fun - it sucks at times to do corporate websites, cause there's no creativity and you're bound by so much - but I do things on the side for fun too, and for some extra money, or bartering.

I get free karate photos for doing this one: http://www.kicksphotousa.com/
I get free riding lessons for doing this one: http://www.komeekafarm.com/

I can have fun with those. beigesmile.gif Between that stuff, and VoodooMoose, it keeps from being repetative and boring.

What a range of jobs we have here! Astrid, more power to you, I did "customer service" on the phone for 6 years as part of my meteorology job (we supported the client software/hardware on the systems they use to make those purdy graphics you see on TV that the weather folks stand in front of) - my GOD, I ran out of patience so quick, and for you to do that in a medical situation, where emotions can run high...you're an angel!

Dorian - my brother is parts manager for an Audi/Porsche place. His stories sound so much like yours...and he deals with alot of rich stuck up assholes, according to him, and they have to joke around to stay sane...it's the business, i guess! *grin*

Ham - the night shift! Urgh! I had to do that, except we'd switch around - 2 weeks of 8-4pm, then 2 weeks of 4-12pm, then 2 weeks of 12am - 8am. Your body never got used to it. The stress you must be under to work those hours for a week then readjust, and all the while dealing with possibly dangerous materials, when your immune system is already low thanks to the stupid hours? You guys amaze me! I'll stop whining about my job now, k thx bye. beigeroll.gif

LOL! Read Dr. Dewpoint instead - I wrote a huge majority of those way back when, answering questions like why is the sky blue. GOD that feels like decades ago.

I work 2 jobs, one being a Homeowned Photgraphy studio in which i take care of retouching and such, nice job, since its my parents i work whenever i want, get paid for the hours i worked same day, and no taxes taken out of the job, not to mention the pay rocks.

Aside from that my other job is part time at an EBGames, which entitles that i listen to the dumbest video game illiterate people alive. i love my job there, but seriously, you just have to wonder how someone cna be so.........i'm sorry but fucking retarded.

i'll leave one prime example of the dumb thief and another idiot whom i'm hoping was just having a stupid day.

Dumbest thief ever:

kid walks into store, all games on the floor are gutted (no games in them) child around 13 steals 2 or 3 cases, returns to the store and complains the was nothing inside the games he had just stolen.

And the other fella is a regular so i assumed he was smarter, but he returned a PC game because it didn't work in his XBOX

And then finally, as much as i love my job, i can't stand listening to all the xbox enthusiast push the game which is (by all means) the bane of my existance, Halo. ; ;

but ah yah, thats what i do for a living ;)

Who said I ever readjust. After about 8 months of working graves every other week, and having nothing real to do prior to noon on my off weeks I've just become accustomed to being up all night. I don't deal well with daylight anymore.
I'd rather work nights than days anyway.
As far as the health issues...not an incredible amount, adjusting to night shift will take its toll on anyone, People get sick alot on my shift and it's not exposure related. The materials are seldom dangerous and we take the standard OSHA prescribed cautions to prevent anything from happening. Only health related exposures issues in my department are few cases of latent TB, a herpes case from a sample that exploded into someone's eye (this has happened a couple of times i hear) and a Hep B exposure because some idiot wasn't wearing gloves while splitting a sample (I don't know, I didn't work there at the time).
It's honestly a great job with unbeatable benefits, so despite the draining hours and stress it's well worth it.

Those are really neat, Nyn. Is your son in any of those? I saw a little boy.

Meteorology sounds interesting. I was originally planning to major in physics and work with something revolving around waves, but I realized that it would take me at least six years to finish college, so I went with philosophy, instead. Can you tell me more about it?

I'd hardly call it a living, but I work on my college campus at an open-use computer lab. I basically just sit up at the front and help students whenever they have questions. It's a pretty easy job and, consequently, it doesn't pay much. But it gets me by from week to week. Plus I work in the college of education, and that is 90% female. I have no complaints.

beigesmile.gif No, I didn't use my kids photos on the karate site - I didn't have any when I started this, and we just haven't changed them. The other site is one of my best friends, who was my neighbor till she moved to this new farm the next town over. Those are her kids all over the site - that was fun to do, and see their reactions when we showed them.

Meteorology was and is fascinating - I wanted to be a meteorologist from the time I was in 6th grade. It was my focus all through high school, and I truly enjoyed learning about it in college. I got to do wonderful internships, living and working on top of Mt. Washington for a summer and a winter (the tallest point in New England, in the Northeast - 6,288 ft - home of the "World's Worst Weather") and I got to work at channel 4 WBZ here in Boston, behind the scenes.

That's where i learned I never want to be on tv. The hours, the politics, the stress, was just too much for the poor pay you earn until you get into the night newscast - which is usually years. I say usually because sometimes people luck out - I turned down a weekend tv job at a little local NH station (WMUR) and some new chick named Michelle Michaels took it instead. Next thing i knew, she was here in Boston, then she was on the Weather Channel, and now she's back here in Boston again. Believe me, I wonder if that could have been me at times...but I know her personally, and know the issues she's had to deal with - stalkers, producers who care more about her looks than her forecast, days without sleep or going home - it is just overwhelming.

INstead I took a job at a place where I learned how to run the satellite groundstation, and helped create satellite images that you see every day on the news. We were a giant warehouse of weather data that we would then stream out over satellite dishes to people who purchased our value added products. It was fascinating, but the hours I mentioned above did not work as I went through marriage, the death of my father, purchasing a house, having two kids...I could not function. In addition, I was one of the few females in an all male field - it's getting better, but it's still testosterone driven...I guess that's why I'm not a girlie girl - if you are, you get eaten alive in that field, and I never outgrew it. I'm more comfortable joking around with a bunch of guys than with women. beigesmile.gif

So eventually I had to get out of that department, and I, being a geek since I got my Atari 800 and programmed in DOS, was teaching myself HTML at the time - and my company was starting a *gasp* website - while the web was TEXT ONLY, I started helping to build INTELLICAST. And I loved web work, and it went from there.

The funny thing? I think I do more weather now than when I worked as a meteorologist. I have time to sit down and pour over the computer models and watch the images and study the patterns, whereas during work I had to focus on quality of data, not the CONTENT...and now I get to share it cause I go into the kids' classes every year and give a talk on weather. :D That's so much fun, so in a way, I still use my degree in a big way. AND I get to be online 8 hours a day and get paid for it. ;^>

... Oh my didn't mean to babble on so long.

I have to comment - physics to philosophy - that's an intriguing combination!! The two are such opposites, and yet not - it's like science and religion in a way, they compliment and yet oppose each other depending on how you look at it. Have you read "Angels and Demons"? I think you'd like the opposing viewpoints presented there! It takes one hell of an open mind to have passion for both!
