Get excited.

Keep in mind you will have to do missions completely shit faced. When buying, if you happen to have a PS3 and a 360, remember that we can all unite and kill people online with the 360.

Heads up, GTA4 sweepstakes, I just saw this today. Today is the last day to register. All you need to do is register your XBL gamertag.

EDIT: Also some multiplayer shiznit, courtesy of Kotaku.

Here's all the multiplayer...that we know about. Pull out your trusty cellphone and dial up the fun (but keep that party to 16 people, m'kay?). Race
•Players race from one point to another with cars, boats and helicopters
•In Free Race mode, it's a start to finish race. In Canonball Run mode, players must hit checkpoints along the way

GTA Race
• It's Race mode with weapons that spawn along the way. Plus you traverse on foot.
• A tutorial mode is included.

Team Deathmatch
• Two to eight teams battle. As opposing teams are taken out, the winning team takes their cash.

Hangman's NOOSE
• Four players attempt to escort crime boss while avoiding SWAT team attack. Online only.

Team Mafiya Work
• Two to eight teams take separate contracts like stealing cars and escorting wanted men. The team who completes the most contracts in a certain time wins. Teams can also attack other teams.

Team Car Jack City
• Two to eight teams steal marked cars that spawn on the map. Whichever team delivers the most to the chop shop (in the best condition, or containing drug bonuses) wins the most cash and wins the game.

Turf War
• Two teams capture control points (or "bases") in a game very similar to Team Fortress 2. Controlling points equals cash. Cash equals winning.

Cops 'n Crooks
• Two teams only. One team are crooks who need to escort their boss safely. One team are cops who must bust the boss.
• All for One mode works as described above. One for All mode ditches the boss, and the crooks must escape with no respawning.

Co-op Campaign
• Our own Brian Crecente described it only as a "short co-op campaign," not a full co-op game ala Crackdown.

Other Interesting Multiplayer Tidbits:
• Characters can level up, peaking at level 10.
• All games are played on same Liberty City map.
• Liberty City map is fully explorable in all game modes.

PC gaming is the best man. Picked up Assassin's Creed, and been having a blast. Yeah you gotta wait for some games, like Mass Effect and Devil May Cry 4. But my PC can produce graphical output superior to Xbox 360 and PS3 and better frame rates. And for the most part it features the same games. And most of those games I can wait to play. Besides I can play MMORPGS and excellent RTS games like Sins of a Solar Empire (which is the most kicks ass RTS ever).

But yeah GTA4 has got me excited. I am going to pick up an xbox 360 mainly for this game and so I can kick you guys asses on Soul Calibur 4. I been trying to avoid getting an Xbox 360 for so long, but those two games are about to do it.

But I do expect it to be announced on PC once the hype is over after release.

Just my 2 cents.

No doubt it will come out on PC later, but PC is always getting hand-me-downs from consoles nowadays. A day late and a dollar short.

RTS and MMO are the only genres that are still dominated by PC these days.

Crush can confirm this, I have cheap Sophitia owning skills when it comes to SC games. You won't beat me. ;)
Scan_Man
We will see. I am hardcore when it comes to SC. I've dropped well over a grand when SC2 was in the arcades. Bought SC2 import for gamecube with the Hori SC2 edition arcade stick. Then I also bought the US versions for PS2 and Xbox when it came out 4 months later in the US and picked up two PS2 SC2 hori sticks and coverters so I can use them on Xbox too.

I used to play in the dorms at college and at the arcades across the street. One of the dudes at the arcade I used to practice on made it to the final round in the national SC2 tourney back then. So yeah. We will see. I am a little rusty and adjusting to whatever new game mechanics may take some time. Like SC3, had to learn Ivy all over again because they changed her. But I admit I will take a SC2 challenge up over SC3 any day.

Def going to pick this up when I get an Xbox 360 and SC4. I expect a SC4 edition though.

Now about GTA4 and PC gaming. I really don't mind waiting for games with the exception of games like Metal Gear, Zelda, and Mario. But for the GTA games on PC you can download mods and custom maps and stuff if you like. One of the things missing on consoles still. Hopefully the downloadable content for this game will be a step towards that.
AC9breaker
Yeah I'm totally going out today and pre-paying my copy of GTA as well as picking up a new mic. crash.gif
The online modes sound totally sweet. On somewhat on the subject, gonna reserve my copy of the special Edition Soul Claibur 4 game. Tin Metal box, game art book. July 29 baby!

Yeah man, that's really the only reason I do PC gaming if I do any gaming at all anyway lately. I love the freedom of tweaking everything visually, even little things. It's just damn fun.

So yeah this game owns. A brief review of the game after spending 4 hours on it. First off, that trailer crush posted really captures the feel of the game. Your a a Russian immigrant looking for a new start. Unfortunately fate has different plans for you. I really relate to the story being a 1st generation American citizen in my family, I really feel for the main character Niko and what he's going through. Has a very Carlito's Way feel to it, the story that is. The Driving seem a lot tighter then what I remembered it to be back on Vice City, using the parking brake and doing spin outs and cornering is freaking sweet. Now another feature I love are the choices we're given. I don't wanna spoil any plot points, but I'm glad I'm able to make some decision and play how I wanna play seems like the game will have multiple endings. Who knows. Liberty City is fucking HUEG! They've really captured NYC down perfect. You can totally take a cab ride and enjoy the awesome scenery.

Online.
Fun as hell, I've only done a death match with random peeps and a Free roam game with a friend but had loads of fun. In death match I ran down peeps with my car, blasted them with an RPG, and sprayed them with my Uzi. You can now Aim the gun a bit to get headshots which was totally freaking sweet. Then I played Free mode with a friend where we explored the Liberty City from a chopper went sightseeing tried fulfilling our Jihad fantasies by crashing our Chopper into the Empire State Building and being disspointed by the simple dud, then jumped to our death from there.

one final thing I have to say, NO MORE DEATH BY FALLING IN WATER! Finally! I always thought it was stupid that your character couldn't swim. Now all is well. Can't wait to play with some peeps online! But first story mode!
donkeybeatz
Just got the game for $30 (traded in Kingdom Under Fire and Okami PS2). I'll check it out after the Hornets game guitarist.gif
Crushinator
Yes, this game is FREAKING AMAZING! From the opening sequence my jaw was .

The first thing that jumps out gameplay wise is the physics and controls on driving and moving... Holy shit! It just FEELS fantastic driving around, like AC said, using the e-brake and sliding around corners, smashing into walls, knocking over people. I love little touches like how you can still hear the radio playing faintly outside of a car when the doors are shut, how you can pick up small objects like cups, bricks, bottles and throw them.

The biggest things for me so far are the physics and the improved controls. Its just a joy to tool around the city in a car, weaving through traffic. And all the characters react in such a fantastic way, stumbling, grabbing for a ledge when they fall, hanging off your car door when you drive away after jacking them. beigelaugh.gif

The controls are a huge improvement over the previous games. Holding L to aim now pulls you into a 3rd person aiming cam like Gears of War. If you fully depress the trigger it will lock onto your target, and you can tilt the stick up down left or right to target their head, arms, or legs. If you just half-press the stick then you go into free aim mode which works out pretty well. You can tap the RB to duck into cover and lean out for aimed shots, or fire blindly. The drive-by shooting controls have improved greatly now too. Instead of just holding L or R and firing directly sideways, you now tap LB to break out you car's window, then hold you gun and aim with the right stick while you're driving. Not the easiest thing to do, but hey neither is shooting while driving a car in real life beigelaugh.gif .

I didn't get a chance to try multi last night, but I can't wait to get home to jump right in again!
Vitamin D
Haha yeah this game is amazing. Truth be told I never was too big into GTA, but this game certainly has turned things around in the short time I've had with it. There have been many improvements and it makes the game SO much more enjoyable (the third person perspective like Crush mentioned is the biggest one, along with the improved driving physics). I haven't had a chance to try online yet either, but I'll be down to roll deep with the AT crew later tonight. With this and Mario Kart, I think the PSU event is screwed for me haha.
Crushinator
Holy shit, the multiplayer modes are nothing short of BRILLIANT!

Naba is a beast on Mafya mode. Also cops and crooks is awesome, I've noticed that when playing one for all mode, you gotta split up cause if crooks maage to get just one person to the getaway vehicle, they win.
Wiryu
Can't wait for another round of this shit! :D
Wiryu
well, 32 hours of gameplay later, I beat it. The last missions is crazy, assuming it's no different on the choices you make. (?) A bit of advice, save achievement gains for when you beat the game, having wasted so much time on the mini-games trying to get achievements (Fucking bowling.) I missed that stupid "Beat the game in under thirty hours" achievement, haha. Oh well, It's a nice excuse to go back and make some new choices!
Crushinator
Noice man. Out of curiosity what was your completion % when you beat the game?

I remember in SA i was about 45% completion when i first beat it, and VC I was around 55%.
Wiryu
this one was about 60-65ish I think?

Spoilers kind of, but not really at all.

I don't think you need to do every mission along the way though. Like the Bernie and Assassins missions? I think those can probably wait until after, and since the assassin has so many damn missions, I really reccomend waiting to complete his until afterwards, or you'll waste a lot of time.
Crushinator
GGs on the ranked matches tonight. Gotta get them level ups, grinding Bustas for mad exp.

We need to do some more, still haven't tried Turf War yet.

Yeah you missed out. We had the most kickass getaway ever in cops and crooks. We needed to get the boss (I forgot who it was) to the getaway vehicle (which was a boat). I forgot who was with me but we got to the boat before our boss did. Not sure if this was planned, but I was told to drive the boat up to where the boss was at. The boss along with crush I think was in a car up ahead.

So... we were in the boat driving up and we see them... and they drive the car OUT INTO THE WATER. I didn't see them jump out but I did see the car go past us. They swim to the boat and we were able to get away.

I need to record some of our games haha.
Crushinator
Yeah, that car chase was EPIC. It was like out of a damn movie or something beigelaugh.gif

Basics
• To access multiplayer in-game:
1) Press Up on the directional pad to access your mobile phone
2) Toggle to Multiplayer and press ( for PS3 or for Xbox 360) to accept
3) Choose from Player Match, Ranked, or Party Mode
4) Select from one of 14 multiplayer games and press ( for PS3 or for Xbox 360) to enter the multiplayer lobby
• The lobby is the meeting point for all players before starting a multiplayer game. Here you can see a list of who is playing and change your mode and character model options.
• To invite friends to multiplayer, you use your in-game mobile phone to look them up and then call them. (For Xbox 360 users, you can also select and invite friends via Xbox LIVE.)

Game Mode Descriptions
• Player Match – Results here do not count towards your GTA IV multiplayer ranking. There are separate leader boards for these modes. With Custom Matches, players can host matches where they can reserve spots for friends. Players can be invited into games in progress.
• Ranked – In ranked games, the more player cash a player wins, the higher their rank increases. After gaining a rank, the player unlocks more clothing options for their character. Players cannot invite friends into ranked games.
• Party Mode (2-8 players) - Players can invite their friends to a party mode by using the in-game mobile phone. (For Xbox 360 users, you can also select and invite friends via Xbox LIVE.) The players spawn in a “party area”. After the host, or “party leader”, selects a game mode, all players in the party will join that game mode. In team modes, the party will play against another party. In competitive modes, the game will be played as normal – but only players in the party will be involved, with other people allowed to join the mode until all slots have been taken.

Lobby Information
• The lobby system will only proceed if the host AND at least half of the players in the lobby are readied up. If you want to wait for more players stay un-readied in protest.
• Half of the lobby will need to manually boot a person in order to kick them from the game. In the lobby, you will be able to tell how many people have voted by the flashing icons next to their name. You can also choose to boot people in-game using the phonebook in your mobile phone.
• If you do not want any strangers to join your team then you and your friends should enter games via party mode. This mode restricts teams to only people that are in your party. Party mode will also only allow you to play with other parties of similar sizes.
• All players can invite their friends to join them. This can be done in the lobby or in the middle of games by using their mobile phone. The only exception to this is in Party Mode or in Xbox LIVE Ranked Matches.
• Custom match allows you to reserve private spots for your friends. You can also use this to ensure that you are the host of the match by selecting private slots to be > 0.

Settings
• Auto-aim is an awesome feature that is often misunderstood. It is intended to speed up the game by focusing aiming to a smaller area. It WILL NOT level the playing field. Turning this off will slow the pace of the game down and make melee combat, drive-bys, and sniper action more effective.
• If you are new to GTA multiplayer requesting that the location setting be restricted to the smaller areas (Prison, Docks, Charge Island, Colony Island, Airport, and Bohan) is the best way to go. The larger areas can be very overwhelming for new players.
• Blip settings are another great feature players can use to tailor their GTA online experience. Changing these from All to Leader, Near, or Far is almost like increasing the difficulty setting - we advise using a time limit over a point limit when using the latter two.
• We advise using the proximity voice chat setting to combat against players attempting to dominate the in-game chat with their loud family members, TVs, and music. If you need to talk trash to someone across the map with this on you can simply call them up on your in-game mobile phone.

Tips and Highlights
• All of the non-Cooperative game modes are money based. Only a team or a player can win. The one with the most money will always be the winner. In time limit games, the winner will be the one with the most money when the timer expires. In point limit games, the winner will be the one who reaches/surpasses the point limit first.
• There are 10 levels of achievement. Achievements allow you to unlock more options for clothing and characters.
• Taunts – players can press (L1 for PS3 or LB for Xbox 360) to perform a context sensitive taunt directed at the other players.
• You can talk to your friends on headsets during the modes. You can even have a one to one conversation with a friend by calling him/her through your in-game mobile phone.
• In Player Match mode, you can vote on what the next game will be using the in-game mobile phone.
• Players can set waypoints for other teammates in vehicles.
• A player’s gamertag will disappear whenever that player crouches or uses cover.

I didn't know about the cell phone calling/inviting other players, cool feature!
AC9breaker
So since a few of us have already beat the game what do you guys think? I was personally very impressed. But I wanna hear from you guys first before I go much more in depth?
Crushinator
I liked the story a lot. It was the first GTA where you actually got a feel for the depth of the characters, their motivations, etc. In the previous games you were just an amoral thug. I read a lot of bitching about the car chases in the game, but I thought they were great. I think the peopel complaining are just noobs that can't figure out the finer points of driving.

I got the ending where Kate dies. When it happened I was like "oh shiiiiit". I knew something bad was going to go down at the wedding, but I didn't expect that. It was a good catalyst for the ending of the game though, since Niko's revenge on Darko was pretty unfulfilling.

Gameplay-wise I like the changes to the side-job missions, like the taxi and vigilante missions. Sucks that they don't have the fire and ambulance missions anymore though. The whole relationship focused aspect of the game is fun, but it can be a hassle when you are trying to do missions and you have 4 people asking you to hang out. The perks you get for building up the relationships are nice though.

The multiplayer is fun as hell, I think that aspect along will give the game a lot of legs, and downloadable expansions will just fuel the fire later this year.
Henge
I just cleared single player mode at 61.75%. I got the ending where Kate dies as well. I really enjoy GTA4, it's much more immersive than the predecessors as i believe AC9 mentioned above. the improvements in realism and functionality of the combat/driving systems, along with the whole cellphone/contacts interface are nice improvements and along with the lush graphics of modern gaming, really give the series a polished and shiny finish.

My few qualms with the game are easily fixed via DLC:

Limited clothing selections
Lack of more boat/plane/chopper interaction.

also the "friends" calling your cellphone all the time gets annoying, but yay for sleep mode.
Crushinator
Yeah, the choppers and boats were way underused in the story missions. Theres like 2 missions where you use the helicopter!

But I always use it to get the jump on the victims in the assassination missions beigelaugh.gif
