Full Version: Do any of your friends play pso?
Apocalypse Tribe HQ > Diversions > Phantasy Star
Dive
My brother and a couple friends of mine used to play v1, but they quickly lost interest and moved on to other games, diversions etc. I don't know what keeps certain people playing pso for as long as most of us have. This is by far the longest I have ever played a single game.

Do your friends or family think you are strange for holding onto a game for so long? My brother is always trying to get me to join him and his Clan for some Quake 3, or Enemy Territory action. That's really fun but after a while I think to myself that I could be getting another level or knocking off a few minutes on one of my C-Mode characters. beigelaugh.gif

So does anybody you know in real life play pso?
DarkEpyon
Nope, just me, myself, and I. My parents were astonished to learn that I had 900+ hours on Zeota, and said I needed a life. I told them it's all been since November and they weren't so shocked.

Yeah, my best friend in fact. Around V1, when importers were running around with V2. It was pretty cool, played for a good month or so, then he moved onto Nox, C&C, and various PC games. (kinda like me now... *shrug*) We still play Counter Strike LAN games (something that NEVER gets old >_>), every week, and he still says "why do you still play PSO?" beigelaugh.gif

I got my best friend and his younger brother into PSO sometime last year. We were able to play a few times. Unfortunatly because we don't live so close to each other anymore I never get to do multiplayer offline with him. =*(
Ether
None of my friends play pso. Most refer to it as that evil evil game that steals all of my time
Rogue
Well, I met some of my closest friends on PSO >.> But if you mean people I see from day to day, no. It's just like Ether, they refer to it as the evil game that keeps me inside all day.

Gosh, my friend that lives down the block used to play with me...but cancelled his HL and I still try to get him online, but I don't think it will happen. He lost interest after a month or two of playing...then cancelled HL becuase he did not want to pay for something that he was not using.

By far, this also has to be the longest I have been playing a single game. I was hooked on FF6, then FF4 then FF7 and really short time with FF8, but never lasted this long. I would have to say that it has to be all the people that I have met, especially in AT, that have kept me playing...at least I don't think I am as crazy as I thought or my parents, heh, think. By the way, my friend thinks I am crazy for getting level 80 in a week! Guess some things will never change.

I have about 7 or 8 real life friends who play... it's quite scary really lol.

My best mate from when i was born i've played with since v1 release, 2 mates from school since then also, and about 5 mates from school have bought the GC incarnation, or intend to.

When PSO first came out for the Dreamcast, I actually had a couple buddies of mine pick up the game. It didn't last long with them, though. One of them just wanted to cheat the game to death with Gameshark and got bored because he couldn't(before any codes really came out). The other only played offline and never got past Caves 2 Normal. beigebiggrin.gif Most of my co-workers from GameStop only played for about a month as well. I guess none of em really saw the true beauty of this game. T.T Anyhow, I did manage to semi-talk my best friend into getting GC PSO. He purchased an HL and played for about a month online, but after that, he just didn't really have the time to play and didn't wanna pay $8.99 a month for barely putting any online time in. So he cancelled his HL and thus, ending all my IRL buddies PSO streaks. Of course, I get the weekly, "dude, you still play PSO? aren't you bored of that game yet?" Like I said before, some peeps just don't get it I guess. ;-)

Back when PSOv1 first came out, my two best friends in high school bought it on the first day, along with me. One was a FOnewm named Mojo, and the other was a RAcast name Puscifer. They both played it pretty regularly (though not as much as I did) for the first 2 months or so, but they got bored after that and quit. "Puscifer" came back with a HUnewearl named "Tokiko" about 5 months after he quit, and got her to 100. He was way into duping on v1 too. He was one of the first people to get their character items reset after using the "email your backup save to yourself" trick beigelaugh.gif . Neither of them returned for v2 cry2.gif But who cares, I was knee deep in AT when that started, so I was playing with plenty of cooler people anyways beigebiggrin.gif

Fast-forward to PSOv3, one of my friends whom I met through DDR was all hyped about PSO, thinking it was going to be the best game ever, and when he finally got it for christmas, he played till about level 24 and decided it sucked. He had a FOmar named "Kyoujin" and a RAcaseal that I forget the name of.

One of my fellow ninjas (Cero, the stupidest one) also bought PSO, after I let him create a character on the import, and play offline multiplayer with me. His story is the most amusing.

He can't get online because his mom is crazy and ripped the phone lines out of the wall so that the only access to telephone is through her room. So anyways, he only plays offline, his first characters (RAcast and FOmar) got to about level 130ish, and one day he brought his memory card to school. I usually gave him rides home since he doesn't have a car, and I felt sorry for him having to take 2+ hour bus ride just to get home, and he would always suggest we play pso because I was "so awesome" on it. (I think i was about 150ish at the time). Well anyways we get to my house, and he cant' find his memory card! It had fallen out of his backpack at some point during the day, so we drove back to the college campus and followed his whole path thru the day to find it, but no dice. So there's two 130's down the tube (all offline, mostly solo I would say he probably played 200 hours total?)

So he buys a new memory card, and starts over. This time, he pretty much only focuses on FOmar, and he gets to about level 120. Then his crazy mother flips out and THROWS HIS GAMECUBE IN THE GARBAGE one day while he was at school. Yeah, she is crazy as all fuck. So there is another 90-100 hours down the tube. Not to mention over $200 of games and hardware as well (he had a wavebird, so the controller is now worthless since the reciever was in the GC when it was tossed out with the trash).

Then, about a month ago, he steals his mom's credit card, buys a new GC, new PSO, and new memory card, and charges it all to the card. Important side note...they are pretty damn poor. They usually can't make their gas or phone bills, so that shit is off half the time. I can understand his feelings toward what is mom did to him, but he is an adult and should have some consideration for his family situation...but anways I digress. So he is now about level 90 as a RAcast. About 2 weeks ago, he calls and asks to come over and pick up some CDs that I had for him, so I say "yeah you can come over tomorrow, but I won't be there, so just take it off the kitchen table." Well, the guy came over, memory card in tow, and WHILE I WAS NOT HOME took my Yasminkov 3000v, Spread Needle, and a level 200 mag!!!!!! beigebigeek.gif beigebigeek.gif beigebigeek.gif My brother had let him in, and he told him "Crush said I could take it" bash.gif The worst part is, as I had told him "ok you can pick it up tomorrow" the thought crossed my damn mind to specifically say "don't take any shit from my PSO characters" beigeroll.gif I should have known better.

Anyways, end of story, 2 days later when I saw him again, I punched him in the chode and took my shit back. I will trust him as far as I can throw him. And I have toothpick arms, so that is not very far.

Well it seems like one month is the standard duration for the non-pso addicted (which I suppose is about how long I spend on a decent game), vs. the um....2+ years for most of us, heh.

I have literally tried to push this game on friends like a dealer, "Come on..try it...you'll really like it...come on...you know you want to." to no avail. cry2.gif I launched into a campaign during the early V.1 days to bring my best friend into PSO, showing her what an amazingly cool game it was. "Look!," says I, "Cool sci-fi stuff! Talk and play with other people! Free to play!" No dice. She just kind of wrinkled her nose and asked why my HUnewearl was wearing "moon boots", didn't those go out in the early 80's? *sigh*

I had one mate, Shinobi who played the game (even more than me) for a good 5-6 months... then he got bored of the game and sold his Dreamcast. I think he was the only other person still playing on their Dc and not a certain other console for a long time >.<
He is considering getting PSOGC.. but I dont see it happening.
I could never even persuade any of my best mates to buy a Dreamcast, never mind PSO as well lol

Gosh Crush...I really might have done more than that! You did get the stuff back from him, right?

Edit: I don't trust anyone with access to my memory card(s). I hide the PSO case under my bed (between the box springs and the matress) when I am not around...is it just me or am I a little paranoid? My parents know I play too much...heh, and they are not going to take my character data!

None of my friends are game players. Well, none of my IRL friends anyway. I do have a work friend that I have been trying to get him to play PSO, but he just laughs at me. He even has an Xbox (I have a GC), so I will never get to even play with him, but I still try because I enjoy it so much.
I have met a bunch of people online that I would like to meet one day, but they are all so far away that I know it'll never happen.
