Full Version: DC Universe Online
Apocalypse Tribe HQ > Diversions > Entertainment
HC82
So, does anyone on AT have the new release or is currently playing it? I picked it up recently on the whim of a few friends who also got it. I'll consider taking it more seriously if some ATers are into as well. Currently on "Brave New World" servers.

For those who don't know, it's an action MMORPG that takes place in the DC universe. Questing system is like WoW, as well as the skill progression system. Combat is combo based, so a handcontrol is needed. The combat is about as deep as PSU (ie. button-mashy) making it casual friendly, but with more skill sets and combos available.

It's definitely on a casual basis only, type of gaming, thus making it hassle free. End game content has smaller group requirements, so its a lot more doable.

Between this and the new WoW expansion, WoW is better. But this is something new and its action based.

Yeah, fun stuff. My brother and I had been playing the beta and afterward we decided to pick it up. The best case scenario was that it would be cross-platform so I could play on the Tr3y, but alas this is not the case. Extremely disappointing. Anyway though, I chose Brave New World because my brother started his character there, and then I let Kaz know.

All I've done so far is create my character and the opening tutorial, haven't had a whole lot of time on my hands haha. When I do start to play more, I'll get a hold of you dodes and we'll go all beast mode. at-emote1.gif

I picked it up on a whim as well, although I had been anticipating it. I'll roll on Brave New World and update with my info.
Crushinator
Welp, it sounds like I gotta join in too.

I'll be a yellow glowing Dr. Manhattan rip off called "Dr. Jersey Shore".

My character is Dyne. Currently level 16 w/ Nature powers (mad healz yo). I choose dual wielding swords w/ flight based powers. You can pretty much make your character look like and name him/her whatever you want.

FYI: On the PC version

"Dr. Jersey Shore".

I totally just lost it when I read this.
Crushinator
Picked it up at lunch, I'll be on later tonight.

In as Divewire.

PC Version.

Apart from ranged DPS, my role seems to be enemy debuffing.

Game feels like a blend of Crackdown, PSO, and Matrix Online. Very easy to pick up, and very casual. The UI is tailored for the PS3 so it's lacking a bit, as is chat.

Someone should make a League tonight and invite everyone. I am Lvl 22, Ice/Bow Hero.
Dive
Created ATHQ league. I'll invite when I see people online. /tell Divewire when you are on, for an invite.

Sweet! I'll be sure to try and play more this week.

A Guide to Weapon/Role Synergy
"One of the most common questions I see on chat channels and in the forums both here and at SOE is this: "Is (weapon A) good with (power B)?" This guide is designed to answer that question." -- Article author.

Weapon System
How to hit buttons effectively so you don't suck at pvp:
  • Light attacks- Any tap click (left mouse button or right mouse button) is a light attack, these moves deal chip damage(very small amounts of damage) to blocking opponents and have no special properties.
  • Heavy attacks- Any hold attack (left mouse button or right mouse button) is a heavy attack, these moves DON'T deal chip damage and have special properties explained below. (Note: very few heavy attacks require a tap, read skill description)
  • Interrupt: Interrupts are attacks that stun opponents doing a block breaker, if an interrupt is blocked you will be knocked down and take extra damage. (Lunge attack is one of the most popular interrupts by holding down left mouse)(combos with heavy attacks also interrupt) 95% of all interrupts are melee based minus a couple like rifles lunge.
  • Block breaker: Block breakers are attacks that stun opponents holding down guard, if interrupted while doing a block breaker you will be stunned. 95% of all block breakers are ranged based minus a couple like handblasters tap right mouse tap, left mouse.

Rock, Paper, Scissors and Knowing your Opponent's Weakness
This is the most important section because it explains what counters what, and when to use a different attack and when not to.
  • If your opponent is rolling >> interrupt them with a lunge interrupt (hold down first click) this will stun them and deal damage
  • If your opponent is blocking>>> Block breaker them and they will become stunned and take damage
  • If your opponent is interrupting (combo, lunging)>>> hold block and they will get knocked down and take additional damage
  • If your opponent is using a block breaker >>> interrupt with a combo or lunge attack and they will get stunned or you can dodge it by rolling
That is every counter in the game, by utilizing this information you can avoid EVERY stun in the game or keep your opponent stunned. This is not information you should ignore during a fight, it is extremely important to use these counters at ALL times.

Weapon Strategies
Certain weapons rely heavily on interrupting while others rely heavily on block breaking heres a list and their counters.
  • Interrupt heavy weapons -> 2hander, 1hander, martial arts, dual wield, staff, brawling.
  • To counter heavy interrupt weapons its best to use block on them because their block breaker is usually slow or does little damage.
  • Block breaker heavy weapons -> handblaster, duel pistol, rifle, bow.
  • To counter heavy block breaker weapons its best to lunge/interrupt them because their interrupts are usually slow/ineffective or have too many light attacks before their heavy.
.
Power/Role Sets
Each power in their utility role (controller, tank, healer) does extra damage and takes extra damage against other roles. Here is the counter list so you know which class to attack in pvp.
  • Controller does extra damage to healers.
  • Healers does extra damage to tanks.
  • Tanks does extra damage to controllers.

Next time there are at least 4 people online, we should try an alert. This is a 4 player instanced zone with multiple waves of enemies and a boss.

Example:

donkeybeatz
Managed to pick up the game yesterday. I gotta say, this game is pretty damn enjoyable. Teamed up with Tanshin and did a bunch of quests including defeating Scarecrow. Didn't think I would enjoy the game this much but I'm having fun with it. It's also a nice change from playing Starcraft all the time.

I saw some really cool dudes in the server alongside with some horrid ones:

Oh yeah, as for my info:

donkeybeatz

I was poking around the PSN Store tonight and noticed the game client was free to download and the game itself is free-to-play. Does anyone still play this game? Is it worth the download?

EDIT:
I went ahead and downloaded the game last night. I haven't had the chance to play it yet but I'll be giving it a whirl soon enough.

For those that are curious (PS3 version):
The initial download is about 120 MB followed by another 120 MB update. At that point the game will load and then you have to download another 14 GB from within the main game's menu (no option to shut down PS3 after download completes unfortunately).
Crushinator
Did they ever make it so PS3 and PC could play together?

And is there some bonus for people that actually paid 50 bones for this back when it first came out?

It was a fun distraction, since its free now I wouldn't mind having it as a nice diversion once in a while.
