Full Version: Phantasy Star Online 2 at TGS 2010
Apocalypse Tribe HQ > Diversions > Phantasy Star
donkeybeatz
Oh hey, we still have the PSO forums.

I'll just post this here:
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/15/phantasy...s-video-stream/

Teaser video that shows absolutely nothing:
http://bumped.org/psublog/phantasy-star-online-2/

Hopefully, they'll show more during TGS.

I'm excited but also skeptical.

Also posting this for old times sake:

I love how by calling it "PSO2" they are basically disavowing the clusterfuck that was the "universe" series.

Hopefully this harkens back to what truly made PSO great, back in 2001.

No kidding. Hopefully the gameplay shows they have learned their lesson.
HC82
It really has been a whole damn decade of PSO and PSO variations. The portable series show that Sonic Team has learned to improve the gaming/fighting system. Everything else is just a layup for solid RPG style gameplay. PSOers are primarily action gamers, so with that in mind they should understand what we want.

While PSU was button mashy, it did step up from being too "stiff" and confined in the manner that PSO was. So they did listen to the gamers on that end, but the lack of some rigidity in the combat gave away most of the strategy. PSU was fun, but the combat was not deep enough for the hours of gameplay that lied in store.

Needless to say, never release a true sequel into you milk the series 8 times over a decade

Official PSO2 site is up:

http://phantasystar.sega.jp/psportal/pso2/

Its all in moonspeak, but whatever! Progress!
HC82
The decision to advertise it as being on a PC is interesting. Do you think it will alienate a core demographic of gamers that might be console gamers? Either way, it's a good thing I got that new PC.
Crushinator
Maybe Sega is planning a larger scale for PSO2, more like an MMORPG? If that's the case then the limitations of the XBL/PSN networks might be an issue.

They might also want to right on the coat tails of the hype for FF14. Apparently there is a HUGE anticipation for the game in Japan, so it might indicate a new push for Japanese development for PC titles.
Knightsword
Hmm though Sega has a poor track record with their PC titles, from off the wall optimization issues to the utter lack of simple things like AA support.
HC82
Yeah they do have a poor track record; although, Blue Burst wasn't too bad. I'd assumed they should of learned their lesson by now

In fact I just downloaded PSO: Blueburst and I have everything up and running on the Private Server. It's pretty cool and it's a good 10 anniversary celebration for me. We should all join in.

Yeah sounds good, I'm gonna get it up and running right now.
HC82
If anyone is interesting in jumping on PSO Blue Burst for some retro PSO goodness, here are all the full links to get started. It's pretty quick to get started:

1) First register on the schtserv private servers, since they are the most active servers: http://www.schtserv.com/register.php

2) Next download Blueburst installer:

http://schtserv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=...08c985246ca2c6b

which gives you a lot of options or

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4K8VIFBR

3) If your on windows 7 or vista, you must right click the blueburst exe icon and choose to "open as Administrator" to actually play. If you don't you'll probably get some error messages that won't allow you to DL the patches properly.

4) Guide to installation trouble shooting:
http://schtserv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=...750&start=0

5) PLAY!!! I use a PS2 to USB converter to play. But the KB is pretty solid too. If you use a PS2 controller, you can easily customize the controller, just make sure you DL the proper drivers for the controller.

PSU more or less obliterated whatever faith I may have had in Sega and ST. As much as I loved PSO like everyone else, I don't see myself touching this.

same here till i played phantasy star zero. psz is basically pso with photon arts except you have to hold the attack button down for a time then let go to activate pa's so you cant spam them all day.
Vitamin D

You can save yourself some time and skip to about 1:20. So then... what do you guys think?
donkeybeatz
It looks like PSU =T
The added jumping is interesting though. Wonder if there's any platforming involved. I also wonder how they'll handle the techs in this game.

EDIT: awwww shit some hi-res shots up in this: http://www.4gamer.net/games/120/G012075/20110424001/
OK, now I'm a bit excited. The costume designs seem to take some inspiration from the original PSO costumes. They look pretty great.
Crushinator
Daddy like! Hopefully Sega remembers what made PSO so fun, and what fucked PSU.

And how about no paid fucking subscription this time?

Gameplay and graphics look hot.

Yeah! That way it'll be like SE remembering what was good in FFXI and what was bad and doing the right thing.
HC82
Code Bravo for the win!

The characters seem a lot more mobile. At this point, it's up to Sonic Team to make things right. We know what needs to be done and they've had enough time messing around with all these other PSO title variations. So, they just need to do it already!

Balls to the wall action + Awesome RPG character growth elements + funky Phantasy Star world = WIN

I will be there! buttrock.gif

have any of you guys played phantasy star portable 2? some of the stuff you guys ask for is already in that game wich ive been playing bootleged on my psp.(you dont even need cfw to pirate psp games these days.....) free to play online they also changed a lot of stuff. like i think they got rid of synthing weapons. PP is a character stat not a weapon stat so no spamming PA's then switching to a different weapon with the same PA you regenerate PP though. instead of using PA's to level them up you just find/buy discs of a higher level. photon blast like summons for human and newman. Fo's can shoot techs consecuitively to make a combo. guns get charged shot wich is like like PSZ style PA's where you hold the button down then let go to do a fancy shot. 2 new nano blasts(they arent just different colors they look and attack different) also theres this system sorta like talents in wow so you can customize your character. like buy a skill to increase your damage with double sabers. or increase how much you heal for. also sonic team hasnt touched the phantasy star series since PSU:AoI its handled by a company called alfa system now. almost forgot they added the dodge roll from PSZ and you can block either with a 2 handed weapon or a sheild wich you equip with a 1 handed weapon.

shows black nanoblast and mirage blast at 1:00

charge shots

mirage blasts-this isnt all of them

an old friend from pso

Nobody plays PSP and nobody cares about PSP2infinityandbeyond.

PSO2 is the future.

though it may seem that way i was not trying to extoll the virtues of psp2.

Another PSO 2 Trailer.

Dude says "Adventure" a helluva lot. Other than that, jumping, rappies, boobs, and RAcasts. I can dig it.
donkeybeatz
Lookin' good. Hopefully, they'll stick with the 2011 release. Looks like lobbies are back? And dedicated breast slider? What other game lets you do that??

JUMPING-ACTION DESU

Looks awesome, good thing I have a WINDOWS-PC.

First order of business when this comes out (after adjusting the boos ratio on our characters)... HEAT SWORDS.

Gonna dump of a bunch of info here:

Some new game info:

Game Server Information
  • There will be several servers, each known as a "world."
  • Each world is independent of the others.
  • Different worlds cannot interact with each other.
  • Essentially worlds are as they were in PSU. (EK note: Though they are now known as "entrances," originally they were called "worlds.")
  • When you start the game, you can choose the world you want to belong to.
  • You can create characters on multiple worlds.
  • They are considering the ability to move a character from one world to another as a future possibility.
  • If you want to play with your friends, make sure you all decide on a world to start on!
Races
  • There are three races, however...
  • Sakai says, "this is an online game, after all, so we could always decide to increase that number."
Skill Tree
  • This system is used to learn class skills.
  • EXP earned goes toward increasing your class level.
  • You accumulate points by leveling up.
  • By using these points, you can learn class skills.
  • Class skills can only be used on the class you learned them with.
  • For example, a skill learned as a Hunter cannot be used by a Force.
  • Even if you max your class level, you cannot learn all skills.
  • You will have a limited number of points to put toward skills, so individual skill combinations will vary.
  • The ability to redo learned skills is under consideration.
Wired Lances
  • This weapon cannot be used to throw larger enemies.
Rods
  • You can link three techniques to a rod.
  • Only linked techniques can be charged (for stronger attacks).
  • A technique's power, range and effect change when charged.
  • PP cost does not change for charged techniques.
Photon Arts and Techniques
  • Disks are used to learn photon arts and techniques.
  • Disks have certain learning requirements.
  • Requirements are stat-related, for example, one may require 50+ TP.
  • Unlike PSU, there will not be a limit on the number of PAs or techs you can learn.
  • It is undecided if you will be able to return a learned PA or tech to its disk form.
  • The ability to transfer disks to other players (such as through disk restoration) is under consideration.
  • Disks will appear with the level they teach displayed. For example, "Razonde (LV3)."
  • High-level disks will of course be very powerful.
  • High-level disks can be obtained as enemy drops.
  • Low-level disks will include tutorials.
  • Low-level disks can be bought at shops.
Jumping
  • You can perform common and just attacks while jumping.
  • It is unknown how photon arts will work while jumping.
  • Techniques and original combos will change while jumping.
  • Range changes will occur while jumping, for example with original combos.
  • You can jump on the backs of enemies.
  • Most enemies have a weak spot on their back.
  • There are some enemies that, if not knocked down, you will not be able to jump on their backs.
  • On the other hand, there are other enemies that, even if not knocked down, you can still jump on their backs.
Original Combos
  • You can set different photon arts to the three parts of a combo.
  • Combined PAs will let you pull of three-part combos. For example, Tornado Break to Spinning Break to Gravity Break. Also, you can perform normal attacks between all of those.
Interrupt Events
  • Event occurrence locations are not set in stone.
  • There are some rare events which can occur.
  • Due to the wide range of enemy levels you will encounter, expect drastic changes between difficulty levels.
  • Even if you fail an event by not meeting all of its conditions, you will not suffer a penalty.
  • You will receive items and so forth for successfully completing an event.
Death Penalties
  • If you are incapacitated, your individual grade will fall.
  • Results are on a character-by-character basis. For example, if Mr. A dies, Mr. B's grade will not be affected.
  • In short, you don't have to worry about being blamed for giving your party a bad grade!
PSE and PSE Burst
  • There is a new component known as "photon sensitive effect."
  • There is a fixed probability of PSE occurring while you continuously defeat enemies.
  • Attack power, drop rates and Meseta drop quantities are all boosted for a fixed period when PSE occurs.
  • If you acquire an "evolved drop" (details unknown) from killing an enemy, you get even more boosted attack power, drop rates and Meseta payout.
  • If consecutive PSEs occur, you can perform a "PSE burst."
  • Bonuses from a PSE burst last for one minute and include even higher drop rates and highly increased number of enemies that appear.
  • You can extend the PSE burst's duration by killing more and more enemies.
Multi-Party Areas
  • Certain areas allow for up to 12 people to play together simultaneously.
  • However, this doesn't necessarily mean that you are limited to three parties of four people each.
  • For example, 12 individual solo players can all gather in these areas.
  • It is possible to reorganize your party in a multi-party area.
  • For example, if you have three parties of four people each, players from each party can transfer from one party to another.
  • At first you can have the following parties: A1 A2 A3 A4 / B1 B2 B3 B4 / C1 C2 C3 C4
  • But you can swap players around like so: B1 C2 A3 B4 / C1 A2 B3 C4 / A1 B2 C3 A4
  • In multi-party areas, support techniques will only affect your party.
  • There are some techniques that have cross-party effects, however.
Items Drops
  • Drop items are decided on a character-by-character basis.
  • Each character can get different drops.
  • Item drops are based on real luck.
  • The system is similar to that of PSZ and PSP2i.
Units
  • Units exist in this game.
  • They can be equipped to your arms, back and legs.
  • Units can be additional costume parts for your character.
  • When equipped, units can change certain visuals of your costume.
  • Units can boost abilities such as defense and attribute rates.
Mags
  • Mags exist in PSO2 as living, evolved protectors.
  • Details on them are scarce at the moment.
  • Unfortunately, they will not appear in the alpha test.
EXP
  • Whether or not you receive EXP is determined by your range to an enemy.
  • If you are within the enemy's range, you will receive EXP.
  • If you are out of an enemy's range, you will not receive EXP.
  • This may be a counter-measure for multi-party leveling.
Visual Lobbies
  • Event billboards will be in the lobbies.
  • There will also be a large screen theater.
  • Motion pictures of some sort can be played on the theater screen.
  • This feature will be active during the alpha test.
Player Rooms
  • A feature similar to PSU's room will be in PSO2, but details are unknown.
  • Reincarnation System
  • A system of this sort does not exist. No comment was made as to if it would be added later.
  • Note: The Reincarnation System is a game feature from Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity. After reaching the maximum level, you could reincarnate your character at level 1 and start with higher base stats.

Sounds good yah?
Also a little note on the units: Seems like they're still taking concepts from the first PSO and putting it into current PSO games. If you guys recall, there were some concept art in the Book of Hunters art book that showed what we thought were mags. They were floating over the character's shoulders as well as around the ankles. Kinda cool to see it in action today in the form of visible units.
HC82
Nice!

Expanding tatas; quality PSO action at its best.

PSE and PSE Burst seems like a great way to skillful increase drop rates for rare hunting. Also the 12 party groups means they can add interesting raid elements to the game. Uber Time Attack Raid bosses or something.

When is this game coming to the States? A PSO2 count down is in order.
Crushinator
Thanks for posting some HARD NEWS info based in FACTS, Donkey. Good to get it from a real source like ATHQ instead of some PSOW weeaboo bullshit.

All the details sound promising, hopefully they don't fuck up the content like with PSU. And no more BS item crafting either, just drops!

There's no mention of an NA release date yet. The JP release is still a vague "sometime 2011".

Here's another image I swiped:

Very glad to see the FOnewm outfit back in action (with a futuristic twist!). Sure, it's always been goofy but it adds to the character. I mean, how many of you remember how a FOnewm walked when equipped with a rod? No one walks like that, son. Let alone how he casted magic. Looks like I know what I'm rolling with when the game comes out.
Crushinator
Look at the FOcast on the right? Looks badass. I like the character designs, really evokes the feel of PSO pushed forward to a more sleek look.
Vitamin D
All those features sound really awesome. I especially like how the loot system is like PSZ's. I'm pretty damn excited about the game now, I just hope Sega can find away no to eff it up haha.

New screenshots was posted today in the official PSO2 site. I'm not going to post any on here because there's a bunch. Check 'em out!

It's not in english, but who cares! Snagged from the PSOW main page.

There was some live stream today about PSO2.

Official opening

Nothing really special about this other than the fact that there's some lighting tech going on now.

New trailer. Yeahhhh, mags.

Feelin' a lot like PSO. Even the sorta remix of A Whole New World is pretty welcoming.
