~it pains me to say this, but me thinks that the "final fantasy" franchise is starting to seriously lose its way.. -.- perhaps its the side of me that still favors the classic-style (ff-2, ff-3/6 & even ff-7) ~ but i'm compelled to say that these recent styles of the offline genre are becoming fluffy & flamboyant.. =.

~one of the critical elements that draws me into an rpg game has to be its visual style, everything from character design to world design & so on; if that element does not "zing" with what i like, then i'll lose interest rather quickly..

I think the FF games are trying to appeal to a wider audience(general female audience is a possibility). It also seems they are trying to artisticly differentiate themselves from the typical aspects that people associate with fantasy games(ie. Lord of the Rings). I personally think that's a good idea, but also, when those different aspects resemble our modern culture too much, it IMO takes away from the fantasy aspect. Although it is totally dependant on the audience they are trying to satisify, those more intune with that style will gravitate toward it more.

Either way, ALL FF games have a huge marketing/business influence in their developement. So, yes, those hot pants are there because they are HOT to look at. I seriously doubt she is wearing them for a reason that is story related(ex.Summoners horn headband or dress wear in Spira to represent the unique culture and growth).

As for Kaz's comment on the "girly" looking guy, I don't really like that look either(clothing is fine though). If anything, such a look draws the male crowd away. If they want to capture the pop teenage female audience, they should just make him more "cute" and not in that odd stage of puberty, yet he has a developed male body(past puberty).

I still think it can be difficult to appease both sides, guys want a tough "badass" and women want a female hero who isn't all about being a sex object, which is oviously geared toward men. Of course i'm doing some generalizing here, more important aspects like story and delivery of gameplay have a greater bearing then "dude, he looks like a dork," but sometimes it really boils down to that.
