We've taken a long hard look at the silhouettes that appear behind the Capcom and Marvel logos are the start of the footage (and, again, in the background of the official art) and have, we think, identified some of the other characters, including Dante, Viewtiful Joe, Chun-Li, Frank West, Captain America, Dr. Doom, Deadpool and Super-Skrull.

A very nice detail is the characters calls out the name of the character you tag in.

Tanshin, I don't think fitting this in with the established comic book canon has ever been the goal in the VS series. So that wiki officially stating they are from an alternate dimension is funny to me because the games is never meant to be apart of anything. MvC is more like taking a character's familiar likeness and abilities and pitting them against another in some kind of fan fiction dream match. Just a flashy, spectacle, fantasy fighting game.

Having the Marvel characters in there is for marketing purposes. They are an established franchise that people are familiar with; more likely to spend money on. You can easily replace all the Marvel characters with original characters, but retain their basic abilities, and the gameplay would go unchanged. So I would not get too bugged over inaccuracies because they not really the Marvel characters you know, just their likeness is.
